Big storm for Northeast- storm surge possible!

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Fri Jan 21, 2005 11:17 pm

I produced a large hurricane and nor'easter storm surge awareness campaign for portions of western Long Island in 2002. Part of my research for the project showed me how much surge can affect the area under the right conditions- surge from a WINTER storm- not a hurricane. Although, yes, hurricanes can bring lethal storm surges as well.

This weekend, it looks like New York and other areas of the Northeast could get pummeled by a massive ocean storm. Winds could top out over 50 mph with snow several feet deep.

I tell you this- I will take a hurricane storm surge and the aftermath warm temps any time over what is about to take place in the Northeast. If all goes according to plan- this could really be a news maker.

Let's hope for the best for our friends up north! While I wish I had some snow here- I don't wish what's about to happen on anyone! Good luck, stay safe.

Good point

You made a very good point. This will likely be a monster storm from Delaware northward into New England. A low pressure system does not have to be tropical in origin to cause a storm surge. I am particulary concerned for the southward facing shores of Long Island.

The Superstorm of 1993 proved that point on the west coast of Florida. Wasn't there a surge of like 11 feet?

Also, northern parts of Florida received considerable amounts of snow. Well, for Florida anyways. I read one place in Northern Florida received 5 inches of snow!
