Snow-wizzard is right about it getting cold just as easily. Simply because we have a bad winter or 10 bad winters, doesn't really mean too much. Things WILL eventually turn and we will get our turn for snow. Until then just enjoy the weather we have right now because it really is quite nice.

Justin must be fully ingrosed in the tapes now, haven't seen him on here for a while now!
Well, I have just finished watching Tape #1, and I have to say the weather back then was truly a 180 from todays weather. Seattle actually had lows in the teens and highs only reaching the mid 20s during the cold spell of '96. It was impressive seeing that the wind chills in Lynden reached 15-30 degrees below!
I'm going to watch half of Tape #2 tommorow.
By the way Randy, your money goes in the mail tommorow. Should be at your house by the Thursday/Friday timeframe.
Sounds good Justin, and yeah what a difference in back then huh!! I still remember the Jan/Feb 1996 arctic blast well! Very cold stuff. I remember they cancelled school for two days in a row, first day was because of the snow, second it was so cold in the morning, that they didn't want kids standing out waiting for the bus in the frigid air.

I also have something to say about all this negativity about the winter. If this was a few weeks ago and everyone was talking with all this negativity, I would likely be getting rather pissed off. This time, I am just feeding off it and every time someone says something more and more discouraging it just makes me believe more and more that something amazing is going to happen this winter. Everyone talking about how it is starting to feel like spring, the grass is getting greener, the birds are chiring, the frogs are croaking, this stuff all is candy to my ears. It sounds sort of like a story that you hear. The animals start coming out from the winter because the weather turns more spring like and everyone begins thinking the winter is over, and then WAM, a winter storm absolutely crushes the area taking everyone by surprise dropping several feet of snow and wiping out any thought of spring. I can't stop thinking about these freakishly warm temps and how everyone is given up already on this winter. I believe that sometime in february we will get smashed with a great winter blast. If you like my idea about this then rock on. If not, we'll just have to wait and see.

Man... I do NOT get this obsession with cold weather with no chance of snow. That seems really strange to me. There is no purpose. And a cold, foggy inversion means bad air quality. You WANT bad air quality. Is there something wrong with you Wizzard??
Got the tapes... watching them now. Still on 12/26/96. Pretty cool.

R-Dub,
I can't wait for those tapes!!! Like I said, your 10 bucks will come. And to some extent, I agree with Brennan...we have to equal out sometime. It can't stay like this for the rest of the winter...it would be worse than last winter. But in any event, nothing looks promising the next two weeks. And if nothing happens by the middle of February, nothing will happen. That doesn't mean we can't get a lowland snowstorm in the beginning of March...but the duration and strength of the snowstorm/cold will not have the same impact if it were December, January and February. With higher sun angles, more daytime heating and higher afternoon high temperature averages, there are many factors that go against an arctic blast in March. But it CAN happen. It happened three years ago...March 2002 was one of the coldest Marches on record.

TT-SEA,
I think people have such an obsession with cold weather because it always brings the possibility of snow. It could be 25 F with clear, blue skies but at the back of everyone's mind?...SNOW. If there's cold air in place, all you need is a little moisture to make things chaotic around here. It doesn't take that much...we're not the Northeast.

O.K... up to what appears to be Day 3 (12/28/96).
It started out pretty tame but it kept going and going. Fascinating stuff.
Like usual... they always underestimate how long it takes to scour out cold air.
Lots of footage from North Bend as well. And the reporter in Bothell with the buried cars under 15+ inches of snow... awesome.
My wife was barely watching when I started on Day 1 but was really watching by Day 3 with collapsed roofs and people skiing downtown. She was pretty amazed at how long the storm kept going. I don't think she believed me when I said that it can really snow in Seattle.
Of course I should mention to her that it will probably never happen again with global warming!!!

Global warming? If I wasn't the nice guy I am I would have to call you an idiot... but since i'm not like that, I will just disagree completely that you think there is global warming... And what do you call that snowstorm on the east coast last weekend? Global warming?
Don't take it personal TT SEA... I just get frusterated when people mention global warming...
I don't think you are an idiot... I just disagree, and truly think that global warming is NOT TRUE... There have been several times in the past few hundred years where people could have said it was global warming, but ended up realizing it was just a 30 or so year cycle.
It sounds like those tapes are really exciting... Is there anything from bellingham on them?
