Capt.Crunch what's your take on FEB Snow for TX?

#1 Postby ETXHAMXYL » Mon Jan 24, 2005 11:16 pm

Capt.Crunch what is your take on the first of FEB snow for NTX? Accuweather has a few flakes during the first week and weekend of FEB. Even the NWS has us below normal temps and above normal precp.
This weekend is still in the 60's and rain, but have heard rumors of something for this upcoming weekend? Any artic or cold outbreaks on the horizon for the possiblity of frozen prec. here?
Can you check your colorful maps and see if I can get out my warm gloves and coat? Or should I keep my spring attire for the upcoming weekend and week to follow?
Thanks! As Always I enjoy your input and maps!

Let's see what February has instored for NTX. Well the rollor coaster weather will continue with another drop in temps starting on the 1st and lasting to about the 4th much like the way it has been the last couple of weekends here in NTX, with a strong cold front bringing down some polor air that puts are highs in the lower 40's and upper 30's and lows in the lower 20's with teens to the north along the Red River.

It looks like Feburary will be wetter than what January has been with a more active SJS that will carry into spring. As far as snow around the first I don't think so, the temps don't look cold enough for snow and the moisture looks to be more too the east by time the cold air funnels down in NTX, But as a side note for the last 3 years February has brought NTX the worst of the wintery precip.

February 14, 2004 Between 2-5 inches of snow were widespread over the northern half of north Texas. The event began during the early morning hours, and generally ended by midday over the metroplex.

February 24-27, 2003 This was a widespread freezing rain, sleet and snow event, with ice to the south and snow to the north. Accumulations were generally 3-5 inches over the northern third of the area, and 1-3 inches over the middle third. Over south central and parts of southeast Texas, ice accumulated to between ¼-½ inch.

February 5-6, 2002 Snow fell over the northern sections of north Texas from the late morning of the 5th to the early morning hours of the 6th. Between 4-5 inches accumulation were reported from Gainesville to Paris, and from McKinney to Greenville to Cooper. Elsewhere, 1-3 inches were the rule.

It looks to be a mild February (avg temps) with the off and on chances for rain thru out the month, The only way STX will see anymore frozen precip this winter is for a setup much like the X-mas week forecast. I just don't think that will happen at this time with most of the ridging across the middle of the country.

What a shame. I wanted to have a snowball fight this year, or build me a Frosty. It's been too long. *sigh*

Oh well, if I'm not going to get any snow, bring on summer so I can start swimming! :)

Chris,

Accuweather just sucks!! We will see a cool down starting tonight with high's around 50 and rain Thursday night and friday, over night lows should hold in the lower 40's maybe upper 30's along the Red River.
We will see another shot of cool air on Sunday with more rain that should last into Monday.
