Help a Teacher with a Weather Project!!!

#1 Postby ETXHAMXYL » Tue Jan 25, 2005 2:53 pm

I am doing a cross subject project in my art class. We are studying a weather unit and I'd like the kids to illustrate some weather sayings and discuss whether there are any scientific truths to the sayings. Can anyone help me out. I know a few but wondered how many different ones are out there.
Ive a few like White Christmas, Green Easter or Green Christmas, White Easter
And of course March comes in like a Lamb goes out like a Lamb..etc
Also do you know if there is any proof to the saying or the history of it?
Thanks to Everyone!!!!

How about Blackberry Winter?

That's the time down here when the last cold gasp of winter drop by ... usually late April. It's supposed to trigger the birth of blackberry blooms.

Good luck!

My hands down favorite is...

A January spring ain't worth a thing.

That one just proved itself in the Northeast this winter. Spring like warmth followed by bitter cold and snow. Another reason a January spring can be bad is if the plants begin to grow and then get wiped out by cold spells later in the winter.

How about this one... I know up here it is pretty big, I can't remember the type of catapillar it is.. But it is black and brown and wooly, I want to say it is a big bear, or a wooly.. Anyways the myth behind it is the more black that is on its wool the harder the winter is going to be.. Maybe that is one you can use..

Ring around the moon--snow will be here soon.

For more information on wooly bear caterpillars, see if info is still up on Scott's website (mid-atlanticwx.com)

wow this is great, y'all have some sayings that I have never heard of before. I bet some of the sayings are very regional like the berry one.
The ring around the moon well ours down here isn't snow, but rain. However I can relate to the Dog Days of Summer.
Thanks Keep'em coming!! This is fun learning new sayings.

I might have this backwards, but...
Red sky in the morning sailors take warning
Red sky at night sailors delight.

I thought it might be
Orange Sky in the morning, sailors take warning
Pink sky at night, sailors delight

That is how I have always heard it. And to a point it does seem to have some merit.

That's how I have heard it as well. Seems logical to me. :) Not too hard to understand IMHO.

Rain before 7, dry by 11.

Not really sayings, but :

If the cows are lying down it is going to rain.

Storm coming when the leaves turn upside down.
