Do you play a musical instrument?

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Jan 25, 2005 3:26 pm

I played the clarinet in school...won a few UIL awards before I quit band. It wasn't really my thing.

I can play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and a few other songs on the piano. ;)

Do you play anything?

No. I would have liked to learn how to play the piano. I never followed through on it, though.

I've tried my hand at drums (which I'm best at), guitar (high school), piano (I can play "We Three Kings"), flute (elementary school), and trumpet (all I really wanted to do was play college fight songs). My only problem, which I've mentioned here before, is that I just can't get a grasp on reading music. Whenever I had to play something, I wasn't "reading" the music. I just memorized the order of hand placement and went from there. I never put the two together. I've always been better with the lyrical part of music, not the musical part.

I began playing the drums at age eleven; was playing the drums at church a year later. Became the drummer for a gospel group by age thirteen; later played drums for both a local contemporary Christian and soft rock/ pop band.

I played guitar in a High School rock band. Just a little on the keyboards. Right now I have an Ocarina but haven't played it much but I will when life slows down in a few months. I plan to get a set of Steel Drums and a Digeridoo this summer as well. I have considered the Bagpipe also but not at this time.

My family has turned off the radio in the car when I started singing along with a song!

Wow! A couple 'o sax players here, eh? I played alto and
then tenor sax in high school - had to learn to READ the
notes. Otherwise, I play keyboards and electric bass,
by ear - a gift from my good 'ole Dad!

I played the clarinet in high school and can still do a half butt job of it if I can practice a little. My daughter plays the clarinet and the Oboe and the violin. My son plays the trumpet, the Euphonem in concert season and a little violin. So the talent is there, they just don't practice enough like they should. Things come to easy for them they don't have to work at things like I had to.......wonder where they got it? There Dad couldn't play a note except on a duck call, but his Dad did play trumpet on Burbon Street back in the day in the late 30's/40's....man don't you know that was an exciting time for him!

I started with drums...didn't get anywhere with them. THEN, my band director (junior high) noted that I always "sang" the bass lines, So...he handed me a double bass, introduced me to a private instructor, and that was that.

I have played electric bass (had a now-old "Rick" and a Peavey TNT amp), but I couldn't get past the upright "feel" I was accustomed to. Frets got in my way, so I had someone make a fretless neck for it, and also a 3' pole stand.

I can still play, but I'm NOT a musician...never have been. My Dad and brothers...THEY are musicians.
