Back with a broken wrist

I'm back. Fell on ice in the hotel parking lot this morning just before we were about to leave. We spent 4 hours in the ER, and that's why we just got back. It was my right one and I have a sling on. Typing is very slow. More later.

A couple weeks ago, I tripped & fell out of the hospital elevator....smashed hard into the concrete floor. It scared those cute little nurses on the 3rd floor to death....they thought I'd broken something. Heck, I wasn't even hurt...just afraid I'd done permanent damage to the floor

Brent - oh wow, so sorry to hear this!! And here I was thinking of you and your family this past weekend. Imagining the fun you were all having in Gatlinburg. Now this.....one thing I have learned though is that kids' fractures (sorry if you're under 18, you're in this category) heal much faster than an adult. I broke my ankle over 10 years ago, needed a cast for 8 weeks. A walking cast for another 4. My youngest daugther broke her wrist when she was in 3rd Grade, fell off a swingset and braced her fall much the same way it sounds like you did. Her cast was on only 3 weeks! Then a sling for a week more. But she was good as new in about a month. She's also broken her collar bone, a toe and a finger. Finally, she's settled down but for a while there she was a real tomboy! Almost took up skateboarding......now she loves playing piano, several hours a day sometimes. Much safer than skateboarding. But with each fx, Laura healed fast.

Brent - sorry about your wrist! you're not alone - turns out my son fractured his finger at the hand 3 days ago and found out today.

Ouch depotoo! Turns out there's not much you can do for a broken finger but wear a splint. I think that's what my daughter did.....and it was painful.

One of the most painful, minor fractures I've heard about is my next door neighbor was stumbling around in the dark, making her way to the bathroom. Barefoot. Misjudged a doorway and rammed her baby toe. It went one way, her foot and 4 other toes the other way. She said she was in instant, severe pain. Wait it gets worse...it swelled up, she couldn't wear shoes, had to wear a slipper and it was winter - snowy, icy, cold outside. Still gets worse - she's a hairdresser and had to stand all day long on that foot. She said she brought in a stool to lean on but kept having to walk around a client to cut hair. So the stool was useless. She said she never walks around in the dark anymore. I've been careful not too after she told us all this horrendous, minor fx type accident once at a ladies night out.

Fingers - toes....you wouldn't think they'd hurt much but wow, they do apparently. My daughter's did (both times).

Hope your son heals quickly Depotoo. You too Brent!

miss mary - thanks!! i did the little broken toe thing myslef so know what she went through - hit it with a brick wall while running the toe today is so scrawny you wouldn't believe and it points out instead of straight! lol

Brent, hope you fell better soon. Hopefully its not a bad break and you won't need surgery. I know where you are coming from. The week before Christmas our old refridgerator went out in our "shed" and we were given a "new used" one to replace it. So my husband pulled the dolly and I pushed the fridge out of the shed and to the left side of the house and then pushed the "new used" double wide from the carport back to the shed (about 200 feet) through the wet grass and some mud.....felt a pop in my foot, went to my bosses house the next day and he took me to the office.....I had a stress fracture in 2 bones in my right foot. Just started wearing my shoe today. Had to get a bone scan and all that stuff. So the time will fly with your wrist immobilized and soon it will just be a memory.....

Brent, so sorry to hear that you broke your wrist. I can relate to the pain you felt. I broke the no.3 toe on my left foot many years ago by catching it on the corner of our floor model televsion set. My second an third toes on both feet are webbed about halfway up the toes. No way to splint it or put on a cast. Now I have a crooked toe on my left foot.

I hope that you feel better soon... and that you don't have a built-in "weather predictor." (I'm old enough so that a few of my more recently broken bones tell me when it's going to rain, going to snow, etc. What can I say? Older does not necessarily mean wiser.)

Ouch, that is a huge bummer!

My worst painful memory is dropping a 50lb level plank on my foot at work. I work at a YMCA in the pool and the competition pool has an unlevel deck (gutters drop down) and I had dropped the plank that levels the handicap lift for easy access for wheelchairs on my right foot... the smallest 3 toes. Thankfully, no bruises, but I was definitely black and blue! My bosses thought I had broken my toes.
