#1 Postby Brent » Fri Jan 28, 2005 8:45 pm

Geez... it's already 31.8 with Freezing Rain here.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BIRMINGHAM AL
734 PM CST FRI JAN 28 2005

...FREEZING RAIN EXPECTED ACROSS A LARGE PART OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN
ALABAMA TONIGHT AND EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...

.AN UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING INTO THE SOUTHERN
PLAINS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE MIDWEST TONIGHT. THIS SYSTEM WILL BRING
AMPLE AMOUNTS OF GULF MOISTURE NORTHWARD INTO ALABAMA. AT THE SAME
TIME...AN EASTERLY FLOW AT THE SURFACE WILL PUSH DRY AND COLD AIR
INTO ALABAMA FROM GEORGIA. THE COMBINATION OF MOISTURE ALOFT MOVING
OVER COLDER AND DRIER AIR AT THE SURFACE WILL RESULT IN FREEZING RAIN
TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING ACROSS PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND
EASTERN ALABAMA.

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WARNING....FOR THE THREAT OF SIGNIFICANT FREEZING RAIN
ACCUMULATIONS.

A COLD RAIN IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE THROUGH THE EVENING...AND LAST
THROUGH MOST OF THE NIGHT...AS TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO SLOWLY
FALL. AS TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW 32 DEGREES...THE RAIN WILL START
TO FREEZE. ELEVATED OBJECTS...SUCH AS TREES...POWER LINES...
BRIDGES...AND OVER-PASSES WILL LIKELY BE THE FIRST THINGS TO
ACCUMULATE ICE. HOWEVER...DUE TO THE EXPECTED DURATION OF RAIN
WHILE TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW FREEZING OVERNIGHT...ACCUMULATIONS OF
ICE MAY EVENTUALLY BECOME SIGNIFICANT ON THE GROUND AND SURFACE
STREETS BY SATURDAY MORNING. THIS WILL LIKELY CREATE HAZARDOUS
TRAVEL CONDITIONS. ICE ACCUMULATIONS ON TREES AND POWER LINES MAY
ALSO CAUSE POWER OUTAGES.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA HAS ISSUED A
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY...DUE TO THE THREAT OF FREEZING RAIN.

COLD RAIN WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH THE REST OF THE
EVENING...WITH TEMPERATURES NEAR OR JUST ABOVE FREEZING. HOWEVER...
ADDITIONAL RAIN WILL FALL INTO DRIER AIR AT THE SURFACE...CAUSING THE
AIR TO COOL EVEN MORE. THIS PROCESS...CALLED EVAPORATIVE COOLING...
WILL CAUSE TEMPERATURES TO FALL TO NEAR FREEZING BY MIDNIGHT.

AT THIS TIME...ICING PROBLEMS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN LIMITED TO
ELEVATED SURFACES...SUCH AS TREES...POWER LINES...BRIDGES...AND OVER-
PASSES. HOWEVER...ANY ACCUMULATION OF ICE AT ALL ON ROADWAYS WILL
MAKE TRAVEL DIFFICULT AT TIMES.

Jeny:

Columbus, GA is still just under a Winter Wx Advisory. But, the county just to their north, Harris Co., GA, is under a Winter storm warning. The Winter Storm Warning in AL is along, north and east of a line basically from Florence, AL to just west of Columbus, GA...or just north and east of Birmingham itself. Also it includes a small area west of the aforementioned line.

Columbus now under a Winter Weather Advisory. County to their north(and west) under a Winter Storm Warning. That's also been shifted south. They reported 33 with Freezing Rain at 9pm. It's looking very bad.

Thank you, Rock. Just trying to get my bearings as far as the AL wx goes....

Still hanging in there in Atlanta. Looks like the next serious band of precip will be moving in momentarily.

Everyone in the path of this storm....stay safe and warm where you are!

Likewise to you Jeny, and you're welcome. Here BTW we are looking at 1-3" snow and light icing.

Hope you don't lose power.

And BTW yeah, where did all this ice come from Brent? You did bring it down it appears! LOL

Oh and that area is in the Central Time Zone there NW of Columbus. Columbus and all of north GA is in the Eastern Time Zone.

YOU'RE getting SNOW? No fair! :cheesy:

I'm hoping for mostly sleet--I know, stupid, but I'd rather let myself believe that it will be sleet vs. freezing rain right now. I really dread the idea of more property damage and power outages after January 2000. I know I've whined about that storm here a lot and I'm sorry for doing that, but I can't impress upon you how much damage that inflicted on my family and our finances.

January 2000 was just the beginning of a long run of bad luck for us. Was hoping we'd finally broken that streak....and now this. Hopefully, we'll come though this storm unscathed and then I'll believe the streak has broken. As long as we have power, I'll be posting here this weekend, so I'll let ya'll know how it goes!

EST. I am on Eastern time as well(because part of the tri-city area is in Georgia).

9:00pm CST would be 10:00pm your and my time.

I always convert for the person depending on the time zone they are in or I specify.

I know how bad them freezing rain storms can be. I lived through President's Day '03 here. Worst ice I have ever seen to date here in northern KY. I lost power for about 6 hours during that one. :( Not one I want to relive. Or for anyone else to. Good luck with this one. You guys will need it; you get less winter wx than us.

You would think that 1 hour wouldn't mean much, but I'm finding it does since my sister moved to Texas last year.

We now operate on "Atlanta time" and "Texas time". Which would be similar to "Atlanta time" and "Alabama time".

Well... about half of my relatives live in CST and the other half in EST, so we just use Alabama time and our time. I know, but it's confusing otherwise.

January 2000 we lost power for THREE DAYS. We had no heat, trees on the house, trees on the car, and my kids (twins) had just turned 5 that weekend. Not fun.

On day 2, we finally gave up on waiting for the power company and went to a friend's house 3 counties away (they had power).

THIS TIME, we have gas logs in the fireplace to heat the house, battery powered lanterns, a battery powered DVD player to entertain the kids, battery powered TV/Wx radio so Mom can keep up with developments, and propane for the gas grill so we won't starve.

We're as prepared as we can be....so bring it on (oops, did I say that?). ;)

We know you tried, Brent. Unfortunately, this time it didn't work. However, Peachtree City, GA is already mentioning another winter wx situation for Thurs-Saturday next week....so maybe next week you will finally have achieved SNOW for the SE!! :cheesy:
