Mild thaw means big snowstorm? Blizzard of 05 and 1888!

#1 Postby krysof » Fri Feb 04, 2005 3:03 pm

There are many other times this has happened, but the record snowfalls for the east happen after a mild period. Hello, it happened this year. 1st half of January was very mild to warm for the entire east and bam-Blizzard for the northeast and an ice storm for the southeast and mid-atlantic. The blizzard of 1888 had very warm air before the huge blizzard and wam, but this will be worse than January. Very active southern jet and the snowiest month for the east. Once the jet digs south, we will get slammed with snow.

Don't know if it means there will be another big Blizz or not, but it is a fairly typical winter pattern. February is typically the coldest and snowiest month for the Deep South and the Southeast.

Which is exactly why I feel like I'm in Hell. Did you know Hell is actually cold? I HATE winter! Can't wait for 90 degrees and equal humidity. Bring it on!

You can have it. One of the great things about living up here in Michigan is the lack of 90+ days with alot of humidity unlike even the MID Atlantic coast which is where i am from till a couple of years ago.
I for one am really enjoying this winter so far. I will admit i can do without so many below zero morning lows such as been seen this winter up here. Love the snow though.

Things are looking very intresting up this way midweek btw. Could be another sizable snowstorm at that time. Till then temps look to be on the mild side with highs into the low 50s today and tomorrow before the cool off begins and then snow by Tuesday perhaps and more so on Wed.

Hey King. It's been pretty cold here relative to Michigan's extreme cold. But we still had frozen icy waters on the bay all the way down past the Bay Bridge. Even the Patapsco River near the Key Bridge was frozen over.

We are thawing out right now. But that doesn't mean it will last past mid February as we know from 1888. A southern stream is also more active now than it was in January. So certainly February a month to keep a close eye on.
