It was back in 1991 or 92 when me and my mom was watching a film called "MacGyver and the Lost Treasure of Atlantis", I saw a list on the top left corner that had counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, that and the weather bulletins. When I saw T-STORM WARNING for Dallas County until 8:15PM, I looked out the window to see what was going on, and I saw trees get pushed by the winds and rain. Unfortunately, we had a short power outage.

I would always sit outside to watch thunderstorms... and wait for a snowstorm to cancel school so I could go outside and do typical kid stuff... during school, I was always bright in science and math.

I really don't remember that much, it all came gradually I guess. I think the thing that really got me into it was when I was 5 or 6 and I saw a satellite of Hurricane Luis and John Hope was explaining it. Had no idea what he was saying but it was interesting regardless :D .

Was that tornado spawned during the Superoutbreak by chance? I was living in Cincinnati at the time (was 11 yrs-old) and two 'burbs there were slammed really hard by the outbreak!!

No Eric, the tornado which damaged my home struck at 5:34 a.m. EST on March 21st...a couple weeks before the superoutbreak. It was part of a very intense and long squall line which caused extensive wind damage and isolated tornadoes across the south from east Texas to the Carolinas as it roared eastward at 60 mph (from extreme east Texas/NW Louisiana at 8 p.m. to Atlanta by 6 a.m.).

The 1974 superoutbreak occurring only two weeks later only intensified my craving for learning about severe weather. While we escaped being hit again on April 3, a killer tornado struck the next counties to my west/ northwest (Haralson/ Paulding); I'll never forget standing out in the back yard with my dad and great uncle and watching that awesome tornadic supercell passing a few miles to my northwest.

Of course, being only 12, I didn't fully understand the ramifications of just how incredible the April 3 superoutbreak was. I just knew it was terrible (all the death and incredible damage shown on tv). A few days later, we drove over to visit our great-great aunt and uncle in Athens, Alabama....and I witnessed the incredible aftermath of twin violent killer tornadoes west of Huntsville that barely missed their home (and frightened my great-great aunt and uncle so badly they moved back to metro Atlanta).

My dad and his drives in the snow, his love of a good storm, and the floods we used to have in our neighborhood everytime the rains were heavy. That got me started.

After that, it was a friend whose dad taught meteorology combined with my witnessing the deadly tornado of April 21, 1967, that took me over the edge.

Been hooked since I was old enough to jump in a puddle.

hurricane Frederic in 1979. I remember waking up and seeing the damage the next morning. It was unreal. It looked like someone had set off a bomb. Even Ivan of 2004 could not compare. Lewis I noticed me and you both went through Frederic and Georges. weird!
