Will SC/NC see any snow before Winter's end?

#1 Postby DLI2k5 » Mon Feb 14, 2005 11:42 am

There has been talk on other wx boards about the possibility of an overrunning event occuting Feb.19-20, and then a bigger winter wx event on Feb. 23-25. To me it appears the temps. are trending warmer than colder and it's gonna be in the low 70's here in Columbia the next couple of days. I would like to know how both events would possibly setup and what needs to happen for all of the Carolinas to get some winter wx fun before the season is all said and done. I know that the SE does get winter events in late Feb. and March, but right now it seems like a pipe dream to me.

I would put a hold on that statement for NC at least for the time being ... right now, the model guidance are not keying in on important features for that timeframe properly ... the GFS, as usual missing AG (CAD situations) and it's overeagerness to warm things up, the EC has a slight bias on the warm side at 850mb (usually 1º-2ºC) at Day 6/7.

Mon frier ... there have been numerous winter weather events in the SE even in late March in the past 20 years. In 1989, in late February and again in early March, down here in my area, I saw three winter weather events. A 4" snow event in late FEB, a ZR/IP event (<=.25" in early March), and SN-/Flurries the next day.

Yeah, it's raining and close to 50 degrees outside. I'm ready to put in some new azaleas but I have this nagging feeling that if I do, the artic blast will return!

Maybe I'll wait until March to do any new planting...even if it feels warm enough right now!

The 12Z CMC is a classic look for a north carolina winter storm. Even the EC and Ukie dont look bad at this point.

I'm glad to hear it looks good for a winter storm in NC as per the most recent model run, but NC has had some accumulating snow this winter. Though it hasn't been much, some is better than none. My main focus is on SC and cities like Aiken, Cola., Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Only thing most have gotten so far is some ice, no snow at all. How do you think this will impact most of SC? Will this be our last shot at winter weather or no shot at all? With temps. being in the 70's next few days, things aren't looking great. We need one heck of a arctic cold outbreak and lots of GOM moisture.
