Police patdown uncovers cheeky smuggling plot

GWINNETH COUNTY, Ga. (Court TV) - Clifton Alexander Carter is a man with an unusual talent.

Authorities in Gwinnett County, Ga., are puzzled about how the 19-year-old man managed to conceal a loaded .25-caliber pistol between his buttocks.

"We don't know why he hid it there or how," said Gwinnett County Sheriff's spokesperson Stacey Kelley.

The cheeky reveal occurred Feb. 1 in the Gwinnett County jail after deputies had arrested Carter on an outstanding warrant from another county and were attempting to perform a patdown.

A deputy frisked Carter and felt that something was odd about the lower portion of the man's backside, Kelley said. Deputies conducted a more thorough body search and found the weapon between the man's buttocks.

According to the spokesperson, the firearm, which turned out to be stolen, was fully loaded. Kelly said the suspect must have hidden the gun on his body before his arrest.

Carter was charged with possession of weapon by a jail inmate, theft by receiving, carrying a pistol without a license and violation of probation.

Charges are pending against Carter in neighboring Barrow County for a separate incident. He is being held in the Gwinnett County jail without bond.

Drunk husband crashes car, but drunk wife provides getaway

OWEGO, N.Y. (Court TV) - When an intoxicated Michael Wilbur crashed his van into another vehicle and decided to make a run for it, he chose a poor getaway driver—his drunk wife.

Michael Wilbur, 42, and Brenda Wilbur, 41, were arrested on Feb. 1 shortly after they fled the scene of a crash car caused by Michael Wilbur's drunken driving, according to Tioga County Sheriff's spokesperson Lt. Rick Travis.

The couple reportedly pulled into a bowling alley in Owego, N.Y., and crashed into a parked pickup truck. Michael Wilbur, who was driving, exited the couple's van and got into a yelling match with the owner of the truck, blaming him for the accident.

"He told [the truck owner] that he shouldn't have left his truck in the middle of the road," Travis said. "But the truck was properly parked."

When the truck owner contacted police, the couple fled, but not before Wilbur asked his wife Brenda to drive instead. Witnesses gave police a description of the couple's vehicle and the two were arrested minutes later.

Blood alcohol tests revealed that the Wilburs were well over the state limit of .08.

"He was one beer of ahead of her," Travis said of Michael Wilbur, who tested at .18. His wife's blood-alcohol level tested at .16.

The couple was charged with driving while intoxicated and operating with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or greater. Michael Wilbur was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and damaging property.

Brenda Wilbur is scheduled to appear in Town of Owego Court Feb. 15, while Michael Wilbur will appear March 1.

Mom Allegedly Beats Sons Over Marijuana

SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) - A mother has been arrested for throwing cans of beer at her children and beating her oldest son after he refused to roll joints for her, police said.

Beverly Fisher, 48, was arrested Wednesday after her 11-year-old son called police and told them that his intoxicated mother was in possession of drugs and threw beer at him, said Lt. Keith Zgonc of the Smyrna Police Department.

Marijuana and several beer cans were found in the home, he said.

The oldest son, 14, said his mother assaulted him after he refused to roll marijuana cigarettes for her, Zgonc said, and the 11-year-old had scratches from where Fisher had thrown a knife at him during an earlier incident.

Drug suspect nabbed after dropping drugs in front of plainclothes cops

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Police got the drop on a drug suspect when the man dropped his stash wrapped in cash.

Hugo Suso-Dominguez, 23, was in line at a convenience store in front of two plainclothes officers when he dropped a dollar bill folded into a pouch Tuesday night, police said.

The officers, who had stopped at the store to get food while on a surveillance operation, recognized the pouch as a method of holding drugs.

One officer picked up the dollar, unfolded it and found white powder, which later tested positive for cocaine, according to a criminal complaint.

"Hugo looked back at us and the dollar bill, which was now open displaying the suspected cocaine. Hugo laughed and stated, 'That is mine' (in Spanish)," Det. Thomas Gutierrez said.

Suso-Dominguez was charged with possession with intent to distribute because there was about one-half ounce of cocaine in the pouch, police said. He was being held on a $2,500 bail.

Partially Nude Man Breaks Into Homes To Sleep

HOUSTON, Texas (KPRC NBC 2) - Police are looking for a man who has sneaked into two homes recently, apparently to sleep, Local 2 reported.

In the latest case, a partially nude man crawled into a 13-year-old girl's bed while she slept in her home in Stafford.

Police said the man, dressed only in his boxer shorts, climbed into the girl's bedroom window at her family's home on Stafford Springs near Avenue E Thursday at 3:30 a.m.

However, the girl's screams for help sent the man back out the window. Police said the girl was not injured.

On Tuesday, about one block away, homeowners in the 500 block of Summer Park Drive found the man asleep on the floor of their master bedroom at 1:25 a.m. He apparently entered through a bedroom window. He took off before officers arrived.

Nothing was taken and no one was injured in either case. Investigators believe the man may just be looking for a place to sleep.

The intruder is a white man with brown hair, 17 to 20 years old, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS.

Driver Said to Make 'Survivor' Tape on Bus

BUENA VISTA, Pa. (AP) - A school bus driver encouraged students to jump around, throw things and misbehave on her moving bus so she could make an audition videotape for the reality television show "Survivor," police said.

Maureen Monaghan was charged with recklessly endangering children after allegedly urging 10 students to act up on her bus for the video, which she hoped would earn her a spot on the CBS show.

A separate camera on the inside of the bus recorded the Jan. 6 incident, and the bus company gave the footage to police.

"She encouraged the children to be disorderly on the bus while it was moving," Elizabeth Township police Chief Robert Wallace said. "In viewing the tape, there was so much commotion going on, we felt it was a very unsafe situation for her to allow this to happen."

It was not clear why the driver wanted misbehaving students in the video. The network suggests that "Survivor" applicants use their auditions to "talk about your job" and "why you would be the ultimate Survivor," according to the show's Web site.

Police collected 21 permission slips that some parents signed related to the taping, but only Monaghan's name was on the bottom, and there was no indication school officials knew about the plan, officer Kris Wagstaff said.

A woman who answered the telephone listed under Monaghan's name said Monaghan was not home Saturday and referred all questions to attorney Charles LoPresti, who did not immediately return a phone message left at his office.

The school district is investigating, spokeswoman Jane Milner said.

A representative of Monaghan's employer, Pennsylvania Coach Lines, would not comment on the case.

Hungry Man Holds Up Store, Demands Sushi

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) - A Japanese man pulled a knife in a convenience store early Sunday morning and threatened to kill himself unless he was given a meal of the choicest sushi.

The 68-year-old unemployed man barged into the store in the western city of Osaka after first setting fire to his nearby apartment, police said Monday. Newspapers said the man claimed he couldn't eat because his state benefit payments had been stopped.

Police overpowered the man after about an hour, during which time he ate bananas and helped himself to alcoholic drinks and vitamin supplements. Police declined to say whether he got any sushi.

DJ suspended after burglary stunt

LONDON, England (Reuters) - A presenter and producer have been suspended by their radio station after staging a mock burglary of their boss's house while on air.

Kerrang! 105.2 said in a statement on Monday it had suspended presenter Tim Shaw and producer Greg Pebble indefinitely following "an attempted on-air prank that went way far beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour" last week.

The station said the two men broke into the programme director's home during their show and caused substantial damage to property, including spray-painting obscenities on a wall.

It added: "Kerrang! 105.2 does not condone criminal behaviour of any kind from staff or listeners, and has accordingly suspended the pair indefinitely pending the outcome of investigations and discussions with our legal team."

There was no immediate comment from Shaw and Pebble.

Italian shopkeeper says tumour sent him on bank robbing spree

ROME, Italy (AFP) - An Italian shopkeeper with an incurable tumour confessed to committing 13 bank robberies in 18 months but said he did it to care for his family after his death, a police official said.

The 53-year-old man raked in a haul of 115,000 euros before being spotted by chance by plainclothes police, police said.

The robber told investigators that he learned he had an incurable tumour in July 2003 and decided to shut his clothes shop because he did not have enough energy to run it. But he feared leaving his family in financial difficulties after his death.

Woman Drunk on Listerine Sentenced

ADRIAN, Mich. (AP) - A woman who pleaded guilty to driving while drunk on three glasses of Listerine was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation.

Officials suspected Carol Ries, 50, was intoxicated after she rear-ended another vehicle at a red light in January. Police found a bottle of the mouthwash in her car.

She passed one breath test, but failed another that used different equipment. Her blood alcohol level was .30 percent, more than three times the legal limit.

According to Listerine manufacturer Pfizer Inc.'s Web site, original formula Listerine contains 26.9 percent alcohol, more than four times that of many malt liquors, while other varieties contain 21.6 percent alcohol.

Woman, 79, Charged for Using Cane on Cops

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Prosecutors have charged a 79-year-old woman who police say injured two officers when she struck them with a wooden cane.

The officers, both of whom were treated for their injuries at area hospitals, were hurt after they arrived at Betty Chambers' home south of South Bend to check on her welfare. One officer had a separated shoulder and hand injury while the other might have suffered a mild concussion, said Jaimee Thirion, a spokeswoman for St. Joseph County police.

Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors charged Chambers with resisting law enforcement and battery, both felonies.

The altercation began shortly after officers John Pavlekovich and Lonny Foresman arrived at the home Friday evening, a police report said.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Dvorak said officers were called to the home to investigate a possible domestic abuse charge against the caretaker.

"This is a serious concern because police are there to protect all of us," Dvorak said.

When officers arrived, the woman's caretaker, Thomas Holleman, 56, became argumentative and told the officers to leave, according to a police report. The officers reported that the man refused to cooperate and an altercation ensued while they tried to handcuff him.

Holleman also was charged with battery and resisting law enforcement.

In his report, Pavlekovich said he heard a cracking sound from the woman's cane and saw her striking Foresman repeatedly in the neck and head.

Pavlekovich said he pushed the woman away from Foresman, who appeared to become disoriented, and the officers successfully handcuffed the man.

A phone number listed under Chambers' name at her address had been disconnected.

Police Chief Awakens, Finds Man on Piano

NEW RIEGEL, Ohio (AP) - The village police chief was surprised when he woke up in the middle of the night to find a man inside his home playing Beethoven on the piano.

New Riegel Police Chief Steve Swartzmiller said he grabbed his gun and went to investigate the noise in his house. He found 19-year-old Shawn Chadwell playing the piano.

Chadwell was drunk and looking for a friend's house when he mistakenly wandered into the wrong place early Monday, Swartzmiller said.

Seneca County sheriff's deputies charged Chadwell, of Bethel, with underage drinking and burglary.

Swartzmiller said his house was the only one around that had lights on and it probably attracted Chadwell. The chief added that Chadwell played perfect Beethoven.

Dog helps bag his owner on pot charge

By KATHRYN YEGGE / The Dallas Morning News

GRAPEVINE, Texas – Matthew Porter and two friends were playing disc golf at a Grapevine park on Valentine's Day when a police officer approached.

Investigating a strange smell, Officer Cris Brichetto asked the trio for identification.

That's when J.D., Mr. Porter's black Labrador retriever, played a game of fetch his owner won't soon forget. The pooch waded into a nearby creek, retrieved a plastic baggie and brought it to Officer Brichetto.

So much for man's best friend.

Euless resident Micah Hays, 24, was arrested and charged with marijuana possession. Mr. Porter, a 25-year-old Richland Hills resident, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

"It's been kind of a running joke with this whole thing," said Grapevine police Sgt. Todd Dearing. "People have been asking us if we're going to recruit the dog for police work."

The group's third member was not charged and was given custody of J.D.

Cops: Man Shoots at Late-Arriving Workers

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) - A 64-year-old man got so angry at a pair of grout workers who showed up seven hours late that he got his gun and took a shot at their truck, police said.

Agron Henci told police he was defending himself because he felt threatened after an argument with the men Monday. But officers charged him with two counts of attempted murder and took him to jail, where he remained Wednesday with a $100,000 bond.

Henci told officers that he ordered the men to leave after they showed up at 3:45 p.m. to do a job that was promised at 9 a.m. One of the workers became angry, called him names and kicked his front door, he said.

The men told police Henci got the gun and threatened to kill them. As they were leaving, Henci appeared in the driveway with the gun and shot at the truck. They drove off and called police, who noted the bullet hole and arrested Henci.

A jail spokeswoman said she didn't know if Henci had an attorney.

Frustrated German Thief Caught Napping Red-Handed

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) - Having broken into a car late at night, a would-be German thief's plans went badly wrong when he failed to pry out its radio, fell asleep clutching his screwdriver, and was woken, then arrested by police.

"The police had an easy time of it," said a spokeswoman for police in the western city of Cologne on Thursday.

The car's owner alarmed police after spotting the man entering the vehicle. By the time officers arrived shortly afterwards, the man was already sound asleep.

New Zealand Man Arrives Naked to Court

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - An environmental protester facing indecent exposure charges arrived at Auckland's District Court naked — but dressed before he entered the courtroom Thursday.

Computer technician Simon Oosterman, 24, was charged during the Auckland Naked Bike Ride last Sunday, an event he organized to protest society's dependence on the car.

When Oosterman was stopped by police during the naked bike ride, other protest riders covered the lower parts of their bodies to avoid arrest.

Oosterman and three supporters — two men and a woman — stood outside the courthouse naked on Thursday holding a banner reading: "Stop indecent exposure to vehicle emissions."

He then went inside and headed up the escalator, still naked, toward the courtroom.

But he donned his clothes before entering court, where he pleaded not guilty and was released to reappear on March 21.

Outside court Oosterman said he would fight the charge as public +nudity+ was "different from indecent exposure."

"The purpose of the protest was to draw attention to the issue of transport emissions," he said.

"There has to be a distinction between people flashing (nude bodies at) young girls and public +nudity+, which is benign," he added.

Oosterman said he decided to dress before entering the court room because he didn't want to risk being charged with contempt of court.

A senior sergeant of police who saw the defendant travel naked up the escalator "told me he was grateful I got dressed at the top," Oosterman said.

Landlord Tosses Tear Gas Grenade in House

LANETT, Ala. (AP) - A landlord in an eviction dispute with a tenant allegedly broke windows at his rental property and threw a tear gas grenade into the residence, police said.

Joseph Hammock, 69, of West Point, Ga., was taken into custody early Wednesday after a 1:30 a.m. dispute at the Lanett rental property. Police said the tenant was not injured.

Officers arrested Hammock near his Georgia home on an unrelated arson charge and took him to Troup County Jail, said Lanett Police Chief Ron Docimo.

Deputies found additional materials for building explosive devices and literature for survivalist techniques in Hammock's Georgia residence, said Troop County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Massie.

Docimo said Hammock will be extradited back to Alabama on a felony charge when he makes bond in Georgia.

Hunger Not Main Motivation For Office Lunch Thieves

Experts Say Coworkers Steal Because They're Jealous

DALLAS, Texas (KXAS NBC 5) -- Thieves lurk in just about every workplace lunchroom, but their motivation to swipe sandwiches from coworkers goes beyond hunger into something darker, according to behavioral experts.

Psychologist Dr. John Deleray said jealousy is usually to blame.

"They perceive that somebody else is doing better or has more than they do," Deleray said.

Ethics professor Robin Lovin said the lunch thief typically focuses only on the item they want, and not on the feelings of the person to whom it truly belongs.

Lovin urges repentant sandwich swipers to clear their consciences.

"Confession is good for the soul, even when it involves little things like this," Lovin said.

Fugitive hides inside clothes dryer

OMAHA, Nebraska (Court TV) - Michael Nunn's new accommodation in a jail cell must feel luxurious when compared to the cramped confines of the clothes dryer where police found the wanted felon hiding.

According to Omaha Police spokesperson Sgt. Theresa Negron, Nunn was wanted for violating an order of protection from a prior domestic violence situation involving an ex-girlfriend. Nunn's warrant was issued Jan. 28 when he allegedly harassed the woman by phone and told her he was sleeping with the mother of her new boyfriend.

Police were initially unable to locate Nunn for about 11 days before they finally tracked him down at his sister's home on Feb. 8.

Joanna Nunn reportedly told investigators that she did not know where her brother was. An initial search turned up nothing, Negron said.

During a second search, investigators noticed that a clothes dryer they had searched the first time was positioned in front of a second appliance. They opened the second dryer and found the 6-foot felon hiding inside. The siblings were arrested.

Joanna Nunn was charged with being an accessory to a felony. Michael Nunn is being held at the Douglass County Corrections Center.
