Yes thundersnow is very real, in fact it happened on the western suburbs of Boston less than two weeks ago. Charlotte had 21 inches of thundersnow late last winter.

Yes!

I witnessed it. 1998, a simple flurries only winter event turned into an 18 inch snowfall. We had thundersnow for a short while. At least 3 inches fell when we heard the thunder. We hadn't put away our glass deck table and it had so much snow on it at that point. I even went out and shoveled off the table. I didn't want the glass to shatter!

One time TWC's Jim Cantore was doing an on-site report in a snowstorm in upstate NY when the sky suddenly thundered and there was a flash of lightning! :)

Good recall, I remember watching that. They showed it about 1,000 times.

Unless there was another time that happened, I thought it was during an overnight report in Worcester. I recall it because around here there were two overnight episodes of lightning and thunder about a minute apart. No bolts, but the entire sky flashed a bright aquamarine blue. For about a second, it was like daytime with not a cloud in the sky. Very cool. Naturally Cantore's episode was hilarous.

Yes...I've seen thundersnow a few times while I have been here, and places such as Oswego average 6 thundersnow events per year.

It may have been Worcester...although I recall he was doing a report one time, too, in (I believe) was Buffalo or near there when that event I mentioned earlier occurred, also.

I witnessed thundersnow for the first time yesterday. Here in Chicago the rain was starting to change over to snow and around the same time there were about 2-3 lighting bolts, followed of course by thunder. It was amazing, hopefully sometime I can experiance this again.

Does anyone have a clip of it that I can download?

I remember that. He was like... "That was a thundersnow."

Just shows you how much power some snowstorms have!

I used to witness it back in the Midwest. Back when our pressure dropped to 28.88" during a winter storm that looked more like a tropical system, there was thundersnow as the core (eye) of the storm moved just south and east of our hometown.

So yes it is a real phenomenon.

Okay guys...didn't Jim do an on-site report in a snowstorm/thundersnow event one time in or around Buffalo, too?

If I recall correctly I believe he did.

Yes, I've only heard it once... in the Blizzard of 1993.

I saw it on TWC a few years back while a Blizzard was hitting NYC though... it was like 2am in the morning.

It was probably NYC and not Buffalo...so many years ago now it seems. :)

I've seen thundersnow here twice in the past 3 years...once with a really wet snow and once with a dry fluffy snow.

During this past pre-xmas snowstorm that impacted many Midwestern states, our dog suddenly got up from her comfy spot on the couch, heading to the powder room. This room doesn't have a window and is her choice for thunderstorms and/or fireworks. She even takes her paw and closes the door! At the time it was just sleeting (we had 6 hours of freezing rain, on top of snowfall). I say just sleeting, as if that wasn't a problem (heard roads were treachurous). An hour later the 11 p.m. newscast came on. Thundersnow had been reported just miles away from us, but none of us heard the thunder. They say dogs can hear it from many miles away. Once we heard they got dumped on mere miles away from us, that explained our dog's odd behavior! We call her our in-house wx forecaster. Who needs TWC? LOL
