I see some record lows in the middle of February in 1993. Interesting.

We need to investigate the pattern back then and see what happened.

TT...It is kind of similar. Feb 93 was very warm and dry the first half and cold and dry the second half...a bit colder than this one, with highs around 40 lows in the upper teens. The summer of 93 was surreal! We had several days with thunderstorms including one of the most severe I have ever witnessed in July. All in all the summer was very wet and unsettled. In fact the weather woke up in March that year and just kept going through July.

The frustrating thing, is that you could make a good case for the weather to wake up and a good case for it stay quiet through the spring. I must admit, I am at a loss on this.

AnthonyC wrote:Another cold night...but warmer than the past two. Currently 37F compared to the upper 20s, lower 30s of the last two nights.

This weekend is a toss-up, depending on what model you look at. All European models indicate a trough over the PNW starting Saturday afternoon, but the GFS barely indicates anything...just a continuation of the rex block. Like I've said before, the European models have handled winter alot better than the GFS so I'm leaning toward that model.

Right now I need to focus on Phoenix for this weekend...and so far it's not looking too good.

It's amazing to see our pattern flipp-flopped with So. California. This is some crazy weather and just doesn't want to give up. Let's just pray our summer doesn't go down the drain...there have been a few years when we've had a very dry/warm fall and winter and then spring and summer went to hell. Not saying it will follow this year, but just an idea.

Anthony

Goodnite to all! Another wonderful day of waking up at 5am for zero period...man I can't wait till that's over!

Anthony....why is it called zero period? Isn't really 1st period? Just curious.

Andrew...We may be in luck tonight. We had just a bit of an east wind here earlier that bought the dew point down to 22. Now the wind has stopped and the temp is falling like a brick. It has dropped from 37 to 34.9 in just a few minutes. I am rapidly catching up to where I was last night at this time.

It's called zero period because it is a class before the start of school and before the official first period of the day. Some people have them, but I think most do not. Now it is 29F, may get into the mid 20's tonight.

EDIT: Now it's 28F.

The GFS seems to be picking up on a profoundly negative NAO and AO period coming up. There have now been several runs that show a E to W oriented trough digging its way westward across the country in the 10 - 15 day period. Very rare indeed. We shall see if it happens or not.

Ok TT I think you should put an end to your sarcasm because it's getting really annoying and its pointless. I too have several thermometers in different places around my house and yard. The high temperature today was 38*F after a morning low of 27*... I only live about 5 miles or so away from Bellingham Bay and up in elevation 307 feet next to lake whatcom. I am on the shady side of the lake so the sun is completely behind the hill almost all day in the winter between November to the end of February... The ground was white and rock hard all day.

The sarcasm that really just urks me is the crap when you talk about 90* temperatures and me still thinking it's winter. That is just rediculous that you would even say that... And saying that no matter what the temp is somehwere else its always going to be 35* SOMEWHERE!!! with exclamation points... What is the point of that?

You also show temps between 53-56 degrees from different nets around the area and say that they are pushing 60... Well 56 isa 4 degrees away from 60 and 53 is 3 degrees away from 50... So i could say the high temps are barely making 50 if you want to put it that way.

And you say that the warm temps for 4 hours is all that matters because that's the only time you are ever outside? Try telling that to everyone and see how many people agree with you... The nighttime in the winter is actually my favorite part of the day... Walking outside in the cold nippy air with the moon reflecting off of the lake and making the frost sparkle... It sure beats 50* temps and sunny weather because for one, 50 degrees isn't that warm, two, we have April-September for temps above 50 degrees for sun...

FINALLY... I AM NOT PISSED THAT IT IS 50+ everywhere besides my house... Just like everyone else on here, I like to show the temperature of my area... I don't see why you have such a big problem with it being cold in some spots... You say I am mad, that isn't true... You are the one hiding your anger behind sarcasm... It's so obvious... Someone on here sounds like a 6th grader but i just can't figure out the name.

Currently 30* and calm at 960 grand boulevard, Bellingham Washington, 98229

Another thing TT... You are so hipped about reaching 50's and being warm here in February when almost 9 out of the 12 other months have average daily highs that are ABOVE 50*... Why is it so special to break 50* and be warm and sunny here in february? You are very confusing... I just can't wait to see how you act when fall starts coming and you want to hold onto summer... or vise versa...

Covington continues to be on a roll for cold nights!

Currently 29 with a dew point of 22. Still 7 hours till sunrise. Could this be the coldest night yet this winter for us?

Brennan...

1) I believe that it was 37 degrees at your house yesterday. I have said that numerous times. You think its funny that I call this spring when its so cold and wintry at your house. You now say that you live in the woods behind a ridge without sun for 5 months. Good for you. Just do not use your location as an example of it being winter.

2) It was 59 degrees in Covington and 57 or 58 degrees at other spots. That is pushing 60 degrees.

3) Its not rainy... its not dreary. Its sunny and pleasantly warm. That is spring not winter. I drive for 30 miles to work and see green grass and trees blooming the entire way. That is spring. I see from web cams that Bellingham is greening up as well. Your backyard could sit in the deep freeze until June... it will not stop spring.

4) I accept all weather as it comes. Read my posts. You are in denial... acting like we live in Faribanks and not Western Washington.

29 degrees here. Winds died as well.

Rich Mariott just mentioned that the pollen count is really rising as the trees start to bloom all over. I think thats a sign of spring??

TT like I have said for a few weeks now, Feb of 1993 is almost identical to this month. (Even Jan of '93 was very similar to Jan of '05))looking at the weather records its almost scary how similar it is, and that month starting on the 20th or so we (up in my area) recieved 4" or so of snow, then went back to this cold at night, cool during the day (for my area) and with snowcover, the low temps from around the 20th to the first of March were in the teens/low twentys. Don't think that will happen this time, but you never know. Total rainfall for that month (here in my area) was i think around 1" (a lot of that was snow melt)

Off to work 8-)

Hi all. It's a chilly 28 degrees here at 8:50am. Our low was 27. So not nearly as cold as the last few nights, and not all that frosty this morning either. -- Andy

Looking the 6z and 12z GFS this morning....6z has this dry and mostly sunny period lasting all the way through March 3rd, though the 12z shows light shower activity here/there toward end of this month and into the early part of next month. But focusing on the shorter term weather for this weekend...GFS remains dry, with the exception of maybe a few light showers for the Cascades for Sunday evening. So could possably be an overcast day for us during that time...maybe. 500MB vorticity heights of today are 564DM and lowering to about 546DM by Sunday evening as a cool trough comes down from the North, but little or no precip to work with. On the other hand, Canadain Global model still showing a deep trough for Sunday and with a little precip for us. ECMWF and UKMET model showing an even deeper trough for that day with 500MB heights of 534DM.

So at this point folks, and with weekend very near...I think we could at least see a few showers here in the lowlands. What does everyone eles think?
