This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Similarities and Differences between '95 and '33

#1 Postby EDR1222 » Sun Feb 27, 2005 10:04 pm

Hey Everyone.

I was just looking at storm tracks of some past years and I am sure we all know that 1995 and 1933 are two of the busiest on record. The interesting difference is the tracks. I just thought some of the experts would like to comment on some of the similarities and differences of the two years. I know we don't have alot of data from 1933, but looking at the tracks there really must have been a monster high pressure ridge in place. Obviously the troughs were persistent in the Atlantic in 1995. Were there La Nina events that led to such busy seasons?
Unusual low windshear patterns?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ed

may have been due to a shift in the longwave pattern, which appears to have happened this september. Something was triggered late in Aug or early in Sept which caused the steering flow to change from sending everything into the Carolinas, Florida from the west (or both as was the case with Charley) to sending everything into the EC of Florida or into the GOM

lots of differences. based on 1933 tracks i would have to say there was a hugh bremuda high supressing storms through the caribbean, while in 1995 there was a huge trough in the atlantic recurving canes well out to sea

another interesting factoid....seven trop cyclones made landfall in a 400mi stretch of the lower texas/northern mexican coastline..five hurricanes and two tropical storms......now that is a ridge from hell
