Second Suspect Caught Breaking Into Jail
UNION SPRINGS, Ala. (AP) - Dreaming of ways to break out of jail is pretty normal. But for the second time in less than a month, police have arrested a man for trying to break into the Bullock County Jail.
Police said Ellis Hudson, 40, of Union Springs was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespassing after he was caught inside the fence of the jail on Feb. 21.
Union Springs Police Chief Jake Wheeler said he suspects Hudson was trying to smuggle tobacco to an inmate, since Hudson had pipe tobacco, three packs of cigarettes and rolling papers in his possession.
"There's no smoking in the jail," Wheeler said. "Someone could probably get $2 for a cigarette in there."
In early February, police arrested another man for attempting to break into the jail. Officers suspected he was trying to smuggle marijuana into the jail.
Hudson was released on $500 bail after spending the night in the jail.

Drunk man steals garbage truck
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Court TV) - Vincent Hayes had the right idea when he called his wife for a ride home after a night of drinking. But police in Knoxville, Tenn., say by the time the woman arrived at the bar, her husband had run out of good judgment.
Hayes, 42, insisted on driving. When his wife refused, he allegedly stole a garbage truck and attempted to drive it home.
According to Officer Darrell DeBusk of the Knoxville Police Department, a city worker called police to report that his garbage truck had been stolen on Feb. 22. The worker told officers at the scene that he had been loading trash into the truck at about 10:00 p.m. when a man ran up to the vehicle, jumped in and took off.
During the investigation, a woman approached officers and identified the suspect as her husband, DeBusk said. Officers located the truck 20 minutes later in the parking lot of a convenience store. Hayes was asleep behind the wheel.
"He had gone in the direction of his home, but obviously didn't make it there," DeBusk said.
The truck sustained some damages — a missing antenna and caution lights, and scratches to the roof — when Hayes drove it under a low overpass.
The Knoxville man reportedly failed a sobriety test and was placed under arrest. He was charged with aggravated assault for nearly running over the city worker during the getaway, vehicle theft, and driving under the influence.
He was taken to the Knoxville Sheriff's office, where he posted $10,500 bond.

Cross-dressing burglar leaves ID behind
JORDAN, Utah (Court TV) - Police in South Jordan, Utah, hope that if Wayne Frandsen serves time for burglary, he'll get some help for another problem.
Frandsen, 18, reportedly broke into a neighbor's home on Feb. 27 to use her computer to access Internet pornography websites and to dial 1-900 sexual service numbers. But before Frandsen engaged in the alleged activities, he stripped out of his trousers and put on a pair of the woman's underwear and pajama bottoms.
When the homeowner returned from church and discovered Frandsen wearing her clothes, the suspect fled, but forgot to retrieve his pants, which contained his wallet and identification.
South Jordan Police Detective Dan Starks said investigators were able to track Frandsen to his family's home a few houses away. The suspect was in the shower and was surrounded by evidence when officers arrived.
"There was the woman's underwear and pajamas on the floor," Starks said. "It was pretty damning evidence."
Frandsen was arrested and charged with residential burglary and two counts of theft.
According to Det. Starks, Frandsen has a troubled past and has been in and out of state's custody over the past three years. Frandsen was on a temporary release to visit his family when he broke into the victim's home. Starks also indicated that Frandsen may get help for his stuff habit.
However, Frandsen currently has to deal with a more pressing issue — getting out of jail.
"He's having trouble coming up with his bond," Starks said. "His parents are not very thrilled with him and have not come to get him out."

8-Year-Old Arrested After Alleged Trantrum
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Police arrested an 8-year-old boy who allegedly had a violent outburst in school, head-butting his teacher and kicking an assistant principal, when he was told he couldn't go outside to play with other students.
The 4-foot pupil was led away from Rawls Byrd Elementary School in handcuffs Tuesday and charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery.
"It's not something that happens every day," Maj. Stan Stout said of what could be the department's youngest arrest ever.
Stout said the chair-tossing, desk-turning outburst occurred after a teacher, and later the assistant principal, attempted to stop the boy from joining his classmates.
The child was later released to his parents.

Women Bare Breasts in Prince Charles Visit
By RAY LILLEY, Associated Press Writers
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - Two women who bared their breasts in protest were arrested and dragged away as Britain's Prince Charles arrived for an official function Tuesday in New Zealand's capital.
The two women, described by police as taking part in "unrelated" protests, were later charged with disorderly behavior.
One woman climbed atop a wall, bared her chest and shouted "shame, shame" as Charles walked toward the City Art Gallery doorway. The woman, exposed from the waist up, was grabbed by two uniformed police officers, arrested and marched from the scene as the prince was led into the building.
In an apparent protest against the monarchy, the woman had the message "Get your colonial shame off my breasts" scrawled across her chest and stomach.
Reporters said the prince appeared to look in the woman's direction and smile as he entered the gallery.
Earlier in another part of the Civic Square, a bare-chested woman carrying a small child was hauled away by plain-clothed police moments before the prince would have been confronted by her as he greeted a line of well-wishers.
The woman, also bare from the waist up, was dragged away shouting, "I just want to feed my baby."
Charles did not appear to notice the woman, local media said.
Both women arrested were later freed on bail, police said.
In another apparently linked protest, five anti-monarchists stood atop a wall with banners reading "Death to the monarchy" and "Honor the treaty," a reference to British crown breaches of New Zealand's founding treaty with the indigenous Maori people.
A woman with a bullhorn chanted, "Shame on the British monarchy, shame for years of colonialism, shame for years of genocide."
The protesters shouted "parasites, parasites" as Charles walked through the city's Civic Square greeting some of the more than 600 people gathered to see him. The protests, the first of his five-day visit to New Zealand, caused no disruption.
The prince was on the third day of a five-day royal visit to New Zealand, a former British colony that retains Britain's monarch as head of state.
A growing republican movement wants to end the link and replace the monarch with a New Zealander. Some monarchists also oppose Charles becoming the nation's future king.

Robber's pistol no match for German chef's meat cleaver
HALLE, Germany (AFP) - A German chef armed with a meat cleaver and pans chased away two armed men who were trying to rob his cash till, police said.
One of the robbers brandished a gun and demanded the cook hand over cash, but his accomplice found that the till was broken and jammed shut.
The would-be thieves eventually fled empty-handed from the restaurant in the eastern city of Halle when the 48-year-old chef started throwing pots and keys.

Man caught cold in quest for love
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - A Los Angeles man who sneaked into Canada in February to see his Internet girlfriend will be deported -- minus all his fingers and some of his toes, the Winnipeg Sun newspaper has reported.
Charles Gonsoulin, 41, will have the fingers and toes amputated because of severe frostbite suffered during a 100-hour trek from Pembina, North Dakota, across the border to Emerson, Manitoba, where he was found wandering on a golf course on February 23, suffering from hypothermia.
"It is better to have loved and to have lost than never to have loved at all," the Sun quoted Gonsoulin as saying. "It was all worth it for me. It's the difference between sitting around dreaming about things and going out and getting them."
Gonsoulin and the Canadian woman met in an Internet chat room in 2002. The woman lives in Quebec, Gonsoulin's lawyer, Mike Cook, told a court hearing. Quebec is about 2,500 kilometres (1,600 miles) east of Manitoba.
Gonsoulin could not enter Canada legally because he was convicted of robbing a Pizza Hut in Arkansas in 1984, the newspaper said.
His girlfriend could not afford to travel to Los Angeles, he told the Sun. So he took a bus to North Dakota where he crossed the border.
"Mr. Gonsoulin didn't really know that there was any place on Earth that could be so cold and so inhospitable," Cook told a court hearing on Monday, adding his client had never felt temperatures colder than 10 degrees Celsius (50 F).
Temperatures dipped below -26 C (-15 F) during his long hike.
Gonsoulin is receiving medical treatment in a Winnipeg jail. He still has not met his girlfriend face-to-face but they have spoken on the phone and Gonsoulin said they are still in love.
No deportation date has yet been set.

Thieves in Ohio Steal Empty Safe
FOSTORIA, Ohio (AP) - Thieves broke into an agency that serves the poor and made off with a safe. The only catch — the safe was empty.
"It is really quite comical," said Susan Simpkins, director of the Fostoria Bureau of Concern. "It was very heavy, and they did us a favor by taking it."
She said the agency had wanted to throw out the safe but it was too big to move.
The thieves entered the agency through a back door after it closed for the day on Feb. 28 and took the safe, which was in the office.
They did manage to grab a small amount of money from the office's petty cash supply, police said.

Colombian Police Impound Pacho the Donkey
By KIM HOUSEGO, Associated Press Writer
BOGOTA, Colombia - The suspect was a little long in the face after being arrested and is braying for an early release. Police said Tuesday they detained the suspect, a donkey named Pacho, after a motorcycle crashed into it on a road in a northeastern city, with the motorcyclist suffering serious injuries.
"When there are road accidents and serious injuries, the vehicles involved are always impounded," said Diana Rojas, spokeswoman for the Arauca city police department.
"We had to impound both the donkey and the motorcycle and put them at the disposal of investigators so they can decide what to do with them and whether to release them," she said.
Pacho's owner, Nelson Gonzalez, said no one should pin the blame on the donkey for Sunday's crash.
"Neither the donkey nor I were responsible because I was in front and the motorcyclist saw me,"Gonzalez told RCN television.
The motorcyclist remained in the hospital on Tuesday.
The donkey, whose legs were hurt in the crash, is being held at an impound yard in Arauca. Gonzalez has been trekking to the site to feed his donkey. Rojas said it was unclear when the investigation would be concluded.

Stolen Vehicle 'Hot' in More Ways Than One
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Police arrested a man who was driving a stolen vehicle that was "hot" in more ways than one — the pickup owned by Cardinal Health Nuclear Pharmacy Services contained radioactive material.
The pickup was reportedly stolen while it was parked in Seekonk on Tuesday. It was later spotted by two police officers about 10 miles away in Fall River.
Fall River Sgt. Roger LaFleur said he and the other officer followed the truck cautiously because of its reportedly radioactive contents and slick road conditions. They took the driver into custody after the pickup stopped.
A city hazardous materials team that inspected the truck and its fiberglass-capped pickup bed determined the five containers carrying suspected radioactive material had not been opened. The truck and containers were then returned to a Cardinal Health Nuclear Pharmacy Services employee.
LaFleur said he was unsure what material was in the containers, or where the truck had been taking the containers when the vehicle was stolen.
John B. Germano, the 40-year-old Fall River man stopped by police, was charged with receiving a stolen vehicle.

Alleged Thieves Leave Wallet Behind
JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Police say things went wrong for Damien O'Brien Stitts when he and a 16-year-old tried to rob a Chinese restaurant's delivery man.
Stitts' wallet was left at the scene and witnesses detained him when he went back to retrieve it. When questioned by police, Stitts gave officers a fake name and also gave officers the name of his accomplice, according to Sgt. Kenny Oldham.
Stitts, 19, was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and obstruction of government operations after Monday night's incident, while the 16-year-old was charged Tuesday with attempted robbery and turned over to juvenile authorities, Oldham said.
Craighead County District Judge Keith Blackman on Tuesday ordered Stitts held in lieu of $2,500 bond. Blackman set an April 29 court date for Stitts.
Police say the juvenile scouted an area to which to lure a Dragon City delivery man, then punched the delivery man in the face after he arrived. The younger teen, to whom Stitts had given his wallet, dropped the billfold when the delivery man sped away, police say.

Clerk Laughs Away Robber in Pluto Mask
CRANBERRY, Pa. (AP) - The would-be robber wanted to inspire fear, but his choice of a Disney character mask to conceal his features provoked only giggles from a convenience store clerk.
Cranberry police said a clerk at Gordon's Mini Market burst into laughter when the person wearing a Pluto mask walked into the store about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The clerk was laughing so hard he didn't comply with the robber's demand to turn over the cash register money — so the frustrated robber left the store, police said.
Police Sgt. Dave Kovach said the clerk's response was ill-advised and dangerous, even if it foiled the robbery.
"Pluto could have been a strung-out heroin addict," Kovach said. "You never know."
Pluto drove away in a car, but not before the clerk noticed that he was 6-foot-2 and appeared to be white under the mask. Police believe he's about 20 years old and weighs about 170 pounds.

Man makes 30 calls to police in one night
GREENVILLE, N.Y. (Court TV) - When James J. Babcock decided to complain about a personal dispute, authorities in Greenville, N.Y., got his message — 30 of them, to be exact.
But before Babcock, 39, tied up the main phone line of his town's police department, he had already made a nuisance of himself with another police department in Louisiana.
According to Sgt. Sal Mecca, Babcock was involved in a civil dispute with a woman in Louisiana over an Internet purchase. Babcock allegedly made several phone calls to the woman and her local precinct on March 1 until the desk sergeant called police in Greenville. He asked that Greenville authorities contact Babcock and advise him to stop calling the woman and their department.
"[Babcock] became irate when our desk trooper told him to stop with the prank calls," Mecca said.
Babcock asked to speak to an officer of higher rank, who delivered the same message. But the disgruntled man refused to take "No" for an answer. He reportedly called back 30 times and harassed officers on a line that also doubles as an emergency line, according to Mecca.
The department turned to the local phone company, and a temporary block was placed on Babcock's number to prevent him from calling in.
When officers went to Babcock's home to place him under arrest, he refused to open the door. Instead, he answered a criminal summons that was issued the next day.
He was charged with aggravated harassment and disorderly conduct. His case is pending.

Naked woman arrested after wrestling dog
JUNCTION, Colo. (Court TV) - Police say the dog didn't seem to mind the attention.
Katherine Jennie Earle was arrested March 2 after authorities in Grand Junction, Colo., received a call about a naked woman wrestling a dog.
According to Public Information Officer Kristine Olson, the dog's owners awoke around midnight and saw Earle, a transient, in their front yard with their Labrador retriever. Officers arrived at the scene to find the dog jumping all over the naked woman.
The dog's owner told officers that Earle had wandered around the property several times in the past and had attempted to befriend the animal. She had warned Earle to stay away.
But the bond between woman and dog was not easily broken.
Earle, 40, told officers at the scene that she loved the dog and "did this all the time." She later disclosed that she had been having sex with the dog. Earle also appeared intoxicated.
The dog was not injured. "He's obviously a friendly dog and was having fun," Olson said.
Earle was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct. She's being held on $750 bond.

Man coughs up cocaine after being arrested for marijuana
CORAM, N.Y. (Court TV) - A suspected drug dealer's attempt to conceal a small bag of cocaine from police nearly turned fatal.
According to a police document, officers in Coram, N.Y., arrested Terrance Haynes on March 1 after a drug deal that involved marijuana.
As police prepared to book Haynes at the local precinct, they noticed that he was unable to speak and was having difficulty breathing. When he began to turn blue, an officer performed the Heimlich maneuver on the choking man.
Haynes reportedly then coughed out a small plastic bag that contained 11 packets of cocaine. If he had ingested that amount of cocaine, the results would have been deadly, the report said.
Haynes was taken to a hospital, where he was found to be unharmed. He was returned to police custody and charged with criminal possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Although the suspect narrowly avoided death, he will have a difficult time dodging the maximum 25-year jail term associated with the cocaine charge. The initial marijuana charge only carried a maximum 90-day sentence.

Cafeteria Owner Stops Robber With Fries
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - A Dutch cafeteria owner used piping hot french fries to fend off a gun-wielding would-be robber, police in the southern city of Helmond said Friday.
Fries, or "frites," are a national snack in Holland and Belgium, where they are deep-fried in oil and then salted and eaten with mayonnaise and chopped onions.
It was not known if the culprit, whose age was estimated at 16, was burned. He had threatened the owner and his wife with a handgun Thursday night, police said.
"He wanted money," a police report said. "But once he had hot frites coming his way, he decided he had had enough."
The fries were cooling in a pot when the owner threw them at the intruder.
Police described the youth, who is still at large, as "thin, white, and with a plump nose."

Man With 'TIPSY' Plate Faces DUI Charges
MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) - Having a vanity plate that reads "TIPSY" may not be such a great idea after all. Josiah Johnson, 23, said his license plate might have tipped off the Clay County sheriff's deputy who pulled him over Friday after he left Coach's Sports Pub in Moorhead.
Now he faces third-degree drunken driving charges after his blood-alcohol level allegedly registered twice the legal limit.
Johnson said he bought the personalized license plate for his Jeep to describe the way it rode — then kept it as a joke when he got a Chevy Silverado because he likes to party.
"It doesn't mean I drink and drive," he said. "It just means I have a good time."
Johnson, who was slated to appear in court March 22, said he'll never drink and drive again.
"I feel really stupid," he said.

Robber Jailed After Using Banana As Weapon
LONDON, England (AP) - Robert Downey had the mask and the attitude to be a successful robber. But he ruined the effect when he tried to stage a hold-up at his local bookmaker's shop — using a banana.
Noting the suspicious bend in the so-called "weapon," the clerk calmly called the police and on Wednesday, Downey was jailed for nearly seven years for attempted robbery.
Prosecutors at the trial at Southwark Crown Court in London said Downey, a drug addict, hatched his scheme to buy more crack.
Donning a mask, he headed for the bookmaker's shop, pausing only to get a banana from the greengrocer on the way.
In the bookmaker's, he pointed the fruit wrapped in a plastic bag, screaming, "I want the money or I will (expletive) shoot you."
This did not produce the desired effect: assistant Peter Humphrey calmly turned to a colleague and said: "He said he has a gun, but it might be a banana."
Downey then produced a pair of scissors, "but seeing no money was going to be handed over he ran out of the shop," said prosecutor Patrick Cahill.
When police arrived they found the 24-year-old nearby trying to pull off his over-tight balaclava. A police dog found the badly bruised banana still in its bag nearby.
Downey, of Chatham, south of London, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted robbery at William Claridges Ltd. in Tower Hamlets, east London, in November. He also admitted possessing an imitation firearm.
"You did say, although it may seem comic now but not quite so comic at the time, that in the bag was a firearm," Justice Paul Dodgson told Downey.
"As it's been pointed out by your counsel that was an attempt that met with no success. Indeed, your victims having guessed what it was, it was never going to succeed."
Downey's lawyer, Rajiv Menon, called the robbery attempt "farcical and incompetent."
"We have to face facts. It was a banana, not even a plastic gun, or something that even looked like a gun. Not only that, but neither of the bookies was scared."
