Interesting weather in Carolinas
Here in Chapel Hill, NC, it has been cloudy all day with moderate rain. The temperature started at 43.2 F in the morning (8AM), fell slowly through the day, and is now 35.9 F. Just recently, around 6:30, some kind of mix of rain, sleet and small snowflakes started falling. I've never seen this before, but soundings hint that there is a slight warm nose plus a lack of moisture in the ice nucleation area. It looks likes ocean spray. Plus, its getting blown around by a stiff NE breeze at 15-20 mph. There have been numerous reports of very heavy, wet snow along with virginia border. In all, some interesting weather.

With these kinds of situations, when precip falls heavier, it drags colder air down from aloft and results in a lower FRZ level. as the precip lightens up, the precip has a better chance of melting off and the resultant FRZ level rises.
