help me understand what this radar is showing

I do not understand what I am seeing on this radar. I looks like ground clutter but I have never seen these colors.

All it is is Ground Clutter, Virga. :lol: :eek: :D

The radar is in clear-air mode. The mets change the radar settings to use less power because there is no precipitation to look at. They just happen to change the color scale when doing this...not sure why though.

That is not virga unless there is precip in the area that is not reaching the ground.

I was under the impression that clear air mode was the highest receiver sensitivity and can pick up small objects like birds and large swarms of insects. To change the transmitte power the pulse width or PRF would have to be changed.......MGC

thanks all who responded, I did not think that this was actually precip. I was just confused with the colors. Thinking back I do seem to remember these same colors back in Dec. when snow was forcast and the mets went to clear air mode.

Yup, virga means precipitation that evaporates before reaching the ground. :)
