When a major storms hits the Upper TX Coast massive wind damage to homes will occur to homes built before the Andrew hurricane codes went into effect. My home built in 1984 does not have any straps and built weak. Definitly not staying in a CAT 3 or higher.
Are there Contractors who Hurricane Proof Homes?.........

Good question KD and I do not have an answer. During Ivan, my Mom was in a "Hurricane proof" home in the Bluewater Bay area of Niceville, FL. this home, from what I understood have hurricane shutters, steel beams etc.
Personally, I do not think there are "Hurricane Proof" homes, but homes can be brought close to or to code to make them safer. A lot of the "strapping" at least of the joists etc. you could do yourself, but the strapping down or bolting of the walls to the slab etc. should probably be left for a professional.

I'd have to guess that there is, however I don't know of any specific ones.
Would be a good thing to research!

unfortunately, a lot of the enhancements wouldnt be possible in your situation. i would concentrate on reinforcing garage and entry doors, joist strapping and the investment in quality shutters. IMO, these will give you the most bang for your buck. if you are contemplating a new roof, joists can be reinforced, heavier grade plywood and dade county shingles used to improve your house's survivability. you may want to check with local emergency management for their suggestions and perhaps, they may be able to get a list of contractors with some expertise in this area.......best of luck to you next season.........rich
