Strong el nino 1997-98 Sequence

April 1997

May 1997

September 1997

January 1998.If you notice on January 1998 the blue cool waters are expanding eastward and from that month foward the strong el nino began to fade.

Image

March 1998.El nino by March was declining fast as the cooler waters continued to expand eastward.

Image

May 1998.By this time el nino was almost history.

However in 2005 there is nothing to suggest that a strong el nino will form in the pacific and as a matter of fact even a weak el nino is not seen this year even though some kelvin waves haved tried to warm up the pacific.However if all the data is correct the 2005 northern hemisphere summer will be in a neutral phase.

Those are some nice maps.... they really illustrate the ideas well. Thanks for the info.

Are there any updated maps for the time frames since then?

That strong El Nino also caused our devastating tornado outbreak in 1998 {shudders as I remember the house I lived in being ripped apart}
