Miss Mary wrote:There are so many benefits from regular exercise. Weight loss or control, energy, fighting off colds or viruses, sleeping better, handling stress more efficiently as you pointed out, keeping your heart pumping well, etc.

I think I just talked myself into doing this again. Today was my first day back on in weeks.

Another benefit, for me anyway, is that is it considered "physical therapy" for a neck injury - helps keep the neck muscles loose!

Keep forgetting to mention - Jim's cousin who was overweight went on the South Beach Diet, 7 months ago. She has lost 47 pounds so far. She looks just great! Her husband has lost at least 30, maybe more. We just saw them both at a family funeral. I knew they would be thinner but they looked so good. And they're staying on this diet they said. It's a whole new way of eating and exercising for them. What I thought was a good thing, is they went about it slowly. Over time, they just kept losing weight, but not all at once. So they haven't lost muscle, in fact they walk nightly in their neighborhood. We're all so proud of them! They still go out to dinner, but choose broiled items. Skip appetisers now and share dessert's. Or order lunch portion sizes. She said they used to eat out at buffet's and really load up their plates. Not now! And both had to go out and buy all new clothes. I'd say she's around 150 and he's about 180 or 190. Both are in their 50s. After watching my mom struggle this week with a recent arm fracture and pain, knowing her added weight is a problem, I vowed to keep my weight down. We know my mom's joints are stressed, b/c she weighs about 230. What do you do about someone 80 who doesn't want to exercise and prefers being sedentary? We all say she needs to walk. A treadmill might have been a good idea when she was younger, but not now. We know she'd fall off and really get hurt.

Well, I'm rambling. Just wanted to say I know 2 relatives that are on this diet and swear by it.

Awesome Chad!!!! Keep it up!!!!!

I am down another 3 pounds this week for a total of 14 pounds since I started. Now if I could just convince myself to get back on that treadmill on a regular basis.    I still will have to take that part slow due to my leg but I think if I do it that way I will be ok and in fact could help strenthen my leg and joints in the long run. Just got to make sure I don't overdo which I am prone to.

So is J still lost on that never ending flight?

Great job Chad & David! David, you don't have to have lost as much as Chad to still be doing great. Suggestion for the treadmill that you probably already know...put it where you can watch TV or pop in a DVD - turn it up and get into your show/movie. The time will fly by. :)

CM - my two relatives that have been on this diet for months now, still swear by it. Occasionally they take a day off but get right back on it. Both were heavy and loved eating out at buffet type restaurants. They still do but fill their plates once, and with smaller portions. Skipping the sides that are high in calories or fat content. In other words, they just eat healthier and in smaller portions. Exercise is a big part of their daily routine as well. She told me her and her husband feel so much better now, more energy and they find they don't miss the quanity of food they ate before. They do still occasionally indulge themselves, having dessert but sharing. Ordering one instead of two, like they used to while dining out.

I think the first month or two are the hardest but now she says this is just a way of life for them. Both are in their 50s too! I'm so proud of them. The husband had chest pains 2 years ago and that really scared them. I think that's what prompted them to diet, eat healthier and exercise.

Good luck - you can do it!!!

I went out of town this weekend. This diet was really easy to follow even though I was eating out. My daughter got a kick out of my breakfast Saturday morning....went to McDonalds and ordered an egg mcmuffin without the cheese and the muffin!!!!!

I weighed myself when i got home a little while ago and the scale said I was down 7 pounds and that was with my clothes on!!!!!!!!

Tonight the exercise program starts!!!!!!!

Way to go Kathy!!! I am still hovering around my weight I have been at for the last month. Need to get this off of dead center!!! The exercise program is another thing. Not sure my body can handle one in actuality, or at least what I would like to do as an exercise program. Even walking for distances is a problem, thanks to my wreck last year.

I haven't read this thread in it's entirety, sorry, just a bit tired this late. I just want to add that it's not about cutting the carbohydrates out, it's about cutting out the simple sugars. Complex carbs are a great thing, like your whole grain wheats and cereals and breads. I'm on the SBD myself, and I eat some complex carbs everyday, and my weight loss is consistant with Chad's. I could go on and on about nutrition, lol, but I'll just add one more thing. The American diet is severly lacking in complex carbs. If we ate more of it, the incidence of colon cancer would be decreased significantly. Also by eating more complex carbs and in turn less fats, incidence of heart disease would decrease as well. Ok, I lied, one more thing, lol. If you have a history of kidney problems of any type, I would steer clear of SBD because usually protein is increased, which just further weakens your kidneys. Proetin molecules are large and can put a strain on them. Anyways, enough of my health rant, lol. Good luck to all those looking to improve their health!

I do the SBD, not because of weight loss, but because of blood chemistry and family history. I need to keep my cholesterol down, and it is extremely effective in doing so. It isn't a hard diet to keep on, and the maintainance level is actually not starvation.

A year ago this month I started the South Beach Diet and managed to lose 50 pounds on it. Once I reached my weight loss goal, I cheated on occasion but still did well overall. The last several months have been very difficult, however, working shifts that I normally didn't work, and I have slipped up big time. I stepped on the scales for the first time yesterday in a real long time and wasn't surprised to see I've gained back 10 of those 50. So now I need to get serious again. Sure could use the encouragement from all you guys (and gals).

Newbie here, figured I'd jump into a non-technical thread before posting elsewhere on the forums ;-)

I started the South Beach Diet in January of 2004, and quickly lost 40 pounds in approx 3 months. After that, it was nearly impossible (using phase 2) to lose any more, and I was satisfied with my appearance for the time being. I moved to phase 3, and gained about 8 pounds back as I approached the end of the 2004 holidays. Those 8 have been sticking around, but dropping 32 and keeping it off for over a year is a real triumph! (I went from 290 to 258 and have stayed there.) No yo-yo dieting here, Dr. Agatston really has hit the nail on the head. I've recommended the diet to friends, who've all fallen in love with it, and kept the weight off as well.

Two weeks ago, I moved back to phase 2 to see if I can get those pesky 8 pounds to disappear once and for all.

Though I'll be honest, I've been cheating on my fat intake - they might be high in fat and cholesterol, but I've got a terrible addiction to Salt & Vinegar Pork Rinds...
