DUDE, I FRIED my Dell!

Whatta day.......smelt something *hot* in the office yesterday, couldn't figure out what the heck it was, WELL......went to check the emails this morning, SSSSIZZZZLE, the power pack FRIED big time. We were gonna get a new puter this year anyway, we needed to buy some equip for the business for tax purposes. So, your talking with a NEW, IMPROVED snowman LOL! The old puter wasn't a Dell, it was a Acer Cheap Wally World promo 6 years ago, talk about SLLLLLOOOOWWWWW! :o This new one is built by our ISP....they are a FULL LINE computer store, this came with a 5 year warrenty parts and labor. It has 5 times the memory and is 100% FASTER...it has a 22GHZ Celeron processor, 128 DDR, 40gb hard drive, 32 mb video card and a kick @$$ sound system, all for $399, that's just the tower, our old monitor is fine. They threw in a new optical mouse, a 50$ surge protector that also has the phone line protector.

Oh, not to mention, we lost EVERYTHING, all of work, NOOOOOO, we didn't have a back up, we do however have paper copies thank God!

Yikes! I'll say you had quite a day, Dennis. Glad that you are up in running with a nice new system.

I am will have my memory upgrade sooner or later, I have the memory... but one of my brother's is going to install it some day soon; when he can get back here. He was over for Easter Weekend, but we couldn't find memory at Wal-Mart, as I mentioned in a post last week.

before you dump the old box, be sure you take the Hard Drive out of it lest some unscrupulous person get a hold of it and reads the data from it. Also, all's not totally lost if you know a computer weenie because they may be able to salvage the data off your old HDD and transfer it to your new one-my son was able to do that when his computer was blown by a hacker (who also dearly paid for that little trick by means of retaliation).

Steve is right about salvaging the data. If you cant' find someone inthe local area let me know. I'll be happy to retrieve what I can. If it was the power supply, chances are we can get everything off!

I've heard this exact thing, you should take the hard drive out of the tower so no one can get the information off of it. Even deleting the temporary internet files and clearing the history leaves information on the drive.

If the HD is not fried just frankenstein it to the new one (slave it off the master) and move your data from it to the new one easy as PIE...let me know if you need some advice

Only one problem.....the old box will not power up what so ever, hit the reboot, hit the on switch and it comes on for a milli second and that's it???? The Acer company that made that box is outta business, 2 years ago, the chances of finding another power supply is zilch, zero, zip, nadda

Losing a computer is a big-time disappointment until the stork brings a brand new one with bells and whistles and mostly speed you didn't think was possible.

Ya know.....when I posted this message last night, my BRAIN was fried too "LOL!" I had spent 3 hours reloading all the programs and websites we use for the business. It came to me this JUST this second and I've been doing it, I click on your email addys at the bottom of your posts, right click your addy and add it to me new addy book......."DUH Dennis!" Sheeeesh! It takes me awhile to figure this sorta stuff out *sigh*!

A hard drive is a device used to store data... you need power and a means to move the data.
(TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER AND UNPLUG IT!)
On your computer you will see a FLAT WIDE cable from the mother board to the HD (this is the means to move the data). See if there is another connection on that SAME wire that is not connected to a device....if so then take your old drive and set the jumper (black plastic thingy on metal prongs to the SLAVE setting) If you can't see the settings you can get the JUMPER settings off of the Hard drives site on the net. Once you do this connect a POWER cable to the drive (all power is directed through this cable) ...there is only ONE way to connect this. Then boot your computer...your BIOS will recognize the new HD and boot off of your MAIN (non slave) drive...just like normal BUT when you click on MY COMPUTER (Icon) you will see that another harddrive is there.. you can then DRAG and Drop the data that you need to your new harddrive and it will save itself to it.

NOW

If you dont see another connection look at the mother board and find the IDE1 and IDE0 slots....they are the WIDE ones with the FLAT wires coming out of them. (not the one going to the Floppy Drive (FDD cable is not as wide as the IDE cable) if one is empty that means that you need to get an IDE cable (5 bucks or less puter shops) and connect it to that slot and then connect the other end to the HD (old one) set the Jumpers to auto or MASTER. then boot your system and do what is mentioned above.

Sorry to hear about your computer. i have heard of Acer but that was a looong time ago!

I have an IBM E Series 270 which I bought in 1999. Unfortunately, the CD Rom I have is read-only so alot of my files I won't be able to save on the 3 1/2 inch diskette. I'm not planning on getting a new PC anytime soon - but then again, she may have other ideas for me!!! :o

As for Accer they have a HORRID reputaion with the Computer repair peeps those and Packard Bells OMG they are Horrid to fix!!! I just tell my customers to Paint them grey and use them as BOAT ANCHORS or BOOKENDS!
