When Do You Purchase Your Hurricane Supplies?

Well, I'm probably like most people. I wait until the last minute :eek:

Not this year though. I've already got what I need.

I stock up almost everything at the start of the season, and it all goes in a trunk in the closet. Enough for me and the cat to live comfortably for ten days, at least.

The only things I need to do if a storm is approaching is buy some extra juice and drinking water, make ice, and fill up my water containers (for wash water).

Oh, and put up shutters on my office, my parents' place and my place.

We always wait to the last minute. We never buy anything until we are under a hurricane warning. We go to Wal-mart and have fun with the mad rush.

I'm one of those that do it little by little.Starting in May whenever I go do groceries I'll pick up some canned food or bottled water or batteries,etc.I do that every time & by the time that Aug,Sept,Oct come which is the real season as far as I'm concerned @ least down here,I am pretty much got everything I need.If nothing materializes then I got got plenty of water,soup & Chef Boyardee to last me till Easter!!!

I usually buy a little at a time and store it in the closet. My mother is always giving me a hard time when I prepare. She thinks if you prepare for a hurricane, you will get a hurricane. The problem with her is too many evacuations, too much preparation, too much worry, and then no direct hit in her lifetime. Then I get the "I told you so", look how much work it is to put it all back for nothing. My attitude is better safe than sorry. The whole family thinks I'm a nut case for preparing. Last season they were the ones without flashlights, batteries, radio when the lights went out for several days. My lights never went out and I was prepared with enough flashlights and batteries for a platoon- go figure. This year I am determined to buy at least enough plywood to make one room safe.

Yeah I as much as I like to be prepared I found myself in that situation last year with Jeanne.My supplies were running low due to Frances.Love the rush but I hate the lines though.

I always maintain a 3-5 day supply of canned goods in case of a power outage, nuclear holocaust, etc. I have a few large plastic jugs that can easily be filled with water as needed. :eek:

Let's admit it, people on this site are nerds including me...for god sake people...who cares about the hurricane season in April? Most people don't care until a storm is coming their way. I like being a nerd though. I'm a huge weather nerd and I love it. lol.

Hopefully all Floridians learned from last season to be prepared ahead of time before the season starts. Remember the shortages last year of plywood, gas, generators, batteries, bottled water, and even non perisable food items :eek:

. Plus people stod in loooong lines for hours just to check out :eek:

. I am always prepared before the season with my Diaster Preparedness Kit that contains batteries, glow sticks, baby wipes, a battery operated tv, radio, can opener, important documents (ie: insurance papers ect), and even a plug in the wall phone!

, If the power is out your cordless phone will not work and if your cell phone batteries die you cannot recharge (unless you have multiple batteries). Bottom line is prepare now, do not wait to the last minitue!

I'm prepared with the basics but need to stop procastinating and get 'everything' done before the season starts.

The wait time was horrible last year for us in the stores and hopefully I never have to go thru the same again.

Yea, I wait for the last minute. In my defense, however, storms rarely come up here to NJ, so we get supplies a few days before it will hit.

My friend's dad gets way too overexcited over hurricanes. I never seen a grown man in his 60's get so excited and nervous over the weather. Last year, for Hurricane Ivan, he sat in his rocking chair real close to the TV screen. As they announced we were now under a hurricane warning, he started to rock harder and harder in his chair. Then, he leaped up and jumped in his truck and probably hit 80 on the way to Wal-mart. He bought every battery in the store, enough non-perishable can good to last 6 months, and his whole bed of his truck was filled with gallons of water. Then, he made his way to the hardware store and got enough plywood to board up his whole neighborhood! He must of had a bad scare with weather back in his day. He is originally from Abbeville, so maybe he had a scare with Audrey. I am surprized that he did not evacuate to Iowa where his wife's family is from. He probably just did not want to leave his boxer Choppers behind. He got Choppers just as nervous about the weather!

I have collected quite a few things over the years for the season... Batteries, and gas lamps esp. when they are on sale!... Things keep adding up, and we never get a storm! I guess when one actually does hit, I could supply the neighborhood! But I still go shopping at the last minute to hear the thoughts of the shoppers and what they think is going to happen. I really dont even need to go... lol... Kinda reminds me of going shopping the day after Thanksgiving.. lol.. the crowds! Im just weird!! lol... Its a social event for me..

I don't buy a thing for hurricane season. I make sure I don't have many perishable foods in the freezer. I go shoping for food more often during the hurricane season and buy meat every few days. I keep my usual supply of canned good on hand.....MGC
