I am disappointed with Lucas. Certainly the special FX are all great, but the story is horrible and the characters are horrible. I guess the change of power is a rehash of either the rise of Hitler or the fall of the Roman Republic. Either way, it doesn't seem that compelling, at least to me. But the worst thing is the characters. I just don't like them nor do I connect to them. They are flat and boring. All of the dialogue seems a bit overwrought, but moreover weak.
Still, it was pretty cool to see Yoda do the lightsaber battle with Dooku (Lucas has to start coming up with better names).
The original Star Wars movies were much better, and even after thirty years, the special FX don't seem that bad at all. That may be because I grew up on Star Wars so it is more familiar, but to be honest, they really don't look that bad. And above all, the storyline is more interesting and there isn't a trilogy of movies after it to which the storyline must inevitably build.
As for LOTR, can't wait to see the third movie. I'm a big Tolkien fan, have read LOTR twice, and Silmarillion 3 times in addition to a good chunk of the History of Middle Earth (I have 9 of the 12 volumes) by Christopher Tolkien and parts of Unfinished Tales. And the first two movies were really good, especially Two Towers. My one concern is how they are going to fit all that material in the third movie and not have it be rushed or cut out. I heard rumors that the scouring of the shire won't be in the third movie, which would be bad, but I suppose it could stand to be taken out.
