New Rainfall Record for Los Angeles

#1 Postby aveosmth » Wed May 04, 2005 10:57 am

In Los Angeles, we are only 1.13 inches away from breaking the maximum annual rainfall that was set in 1888. Our rain season is from July 1-June 30th so we have about 2 months or so....and since there's never any rain here in June, this weekend may be our best shot...hopefully the 117 year old record falls this weekend as we have two decent systems coming through. We will see!!!

I don't follow the weather in your area as much as I should(since it ususally eventually affects us here in TX), but having had relatives in CA for as long as I can remember I did know about the wet and dry seasons and "normal" amounts of rainfall. I was wondering if your area was close to a record.

VB,

It has been an unbelievable season to say the least. Our rainfall totals are above average this year for SEATTLE!!! I think that about says it all...If you get a chance to come out here in the next month or so, you will be amazed...our barren hillsides are unbelievably green, and even Death Valley has flowers that haven't been seen in over 100 years. This is truly a once in a lifetime season for us...I just took a trip up to Seattle, and I was amazed by the greenery up there...and now down here, we're doing our best Seattle impression.

I'm surprised you guys in Texas haven't gotten as wet as you should have...it could be because most of the moisture we got was from the pineapple express & I don't think that would affect you guys in Texas.

Enjoy the green while it lasts. By fall it will be brown. Hate to think of the fire season you will have....MGC

I am also concerned about the fire season down there.

We lived in San Diego for 12 years before to moving to the Seattle area last year. Actually... the amazingly green landscape was one of the aspects that drew us to Seattle. The air is also much cleaner here and the colors are more vibrant... both greens and blues. To have this beauty we have to put up with more rain... but I love that as well.

Ironically... the sun shines here way more often than I thought. The locals have a way of painting a very rainy portrait of Seattle.

We were in San Diego during the great firestorm in 2003. It was like the end of the world. It was almost totally dark at noon for 3 straight days. A huge section of San Diego County was burned to ashes that fall. Most of the backcountry was destroyed. It was tragic and very sad to watch. We spent 4 days with the car packed on evacuation watch. Very tense... especially with two little kids.

My sister and her family still live there.

Unfortunately... wet winters in Southern California usually mean severe fires in the fall. This year could be very bad.

I am concerned about the fire threat as well out here...there is definitely a lot of fuel...however, since we did have a lot of brush that burned only 2 years ago, those areas shouldn't be as bad.
