F-word on SNL

I stayed up to see Paula Abdul on SNL (a show I hardly ever watch anymore). Turns out, she was only on the opening skit, so there was really no point in staying up to watch the whole thing...but, I had a bowl of popcorn, so I did.

The band System Of A Down performed and I wasn't too impressed with them. NBC had to keep bleeping the F word during the chorus of the song. And then -- they missed one.

I didn't post about it because I went to bed after it was over and then it escaped me by morning. But they're talking about it on the radio today. I checked online and there are a few references to it now. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainmen ... 3438c.html

Did anyone else catch it? Since it's not prime-time, but still network -- should the FCC let is slide or should NBC be banned?

Didn't catch it myslef.. But no.. They should NOT let it slide.. Personally I am not offended by the F-word.. Its a nasty word, but in passing im not going to chastise someone for using it.. However it does NOT belong on Regular TV.. They need to be punished in what ever way the FCC sees fit

Saw them as they were performing as I passed through the channel. Not impressed at all and don't ever like the use of the f word in a song. If that is all you have to impress people then you shouldn't be performing!! Did not see the actual miss of the bleep though. That is how quickly I moved on!!

I am actually more offended when they insult groups of people---some of their skits have belittled the handicapped, and have made of light of issues such as child molestation. Those are far worse than a cuss word.

I agree.. Rather tasteless.. I am no fan of SNL.. But making fun of people isn't "against the rules" F Bomb is

I have to say I am completely disgusted by this vanity. Its as if we have to make other things really bad in order to hide ourselves from the true horror of what is going on.

I've never understood why swear words are treated like they are. They are just a bunch of letters put together to make a word. There is almost always another word which means exactly the same thing which isn't deemed offensive. You can say freaking, but not f***ing. You can say crap but not s***. If the meaning is ok for one word, it must be for the other. The only difference is the spelling of the word. Are some letter combinations just inheritly evil or soemthing? Certain words just have some sort of stigma attached to them, because some uptight conservative people in the past decided for some reason, that a certain word should be declared bad. If swearing wasn't an issue amongst people there would be no problem at all, and whats more it would lose it's stigma and swearing likely wouldn't be used as much as it is now.

Bingo Gorky. If people would stop being so uptight about curse words...because they really have no meaning anyways...yeah there would be a sudden increase in the usage of them, but after a while people would get tired of it and the usage would drop off.

If someone can give me a reasonable reason as to why one word can be bad and another one not, when they mean the same thing then I'll admit I'm wrong but I bet you can't as there is absolutely no logic to it at all. The only reason people have a thing against swearing is because they have been brought up to think it is bad. My parents brought me up to not swear. If I swore now infront of them they'd be appalled. Becasue of this, I don't think I swore til I was about 16, at which point I sat down and thought about it and couldn't think of any reason why swearing was bad. I'll use a swear word, rarely, if it fits the occasion, and I know people around me are comfortable with it. I don't go around swearing every other word because to me, it's just another word and I tend to use more than 5% of my vocabulary in normal conversation. Swear words don't offend me at all now and if everyone else didn't get so offended by it there would be no problems at all.

My rule of thumb is that there is an inverse relationship between the number of profane words and the value of what someone has to say.

There are exceptions, like George Carlin, but most of the time they're just used as modifers or intensifiers becaue people don't have an adequate vocabulary.

Which is why I say let people swear all they want. It won't take long before swearing is eliminated because they just become another word in the dictionary

Look, I don't paticularly have a problem with people saying it.. If it's just us adults and someone curses I could care less. They can let it rip on HBO, CMAX, any pay channel they choose. However the F word does NOT belong on local programing..

With live shows though anything can happen, and I think fines for slip ups like this are rediculous as eventually shows will have to run tape delayed just to avoid getting fined. In this instance, I'd have not bleeped the song at all and just told people if they don't like it, they should switch over. Putting bleeps over the lyrics is just censorship, and in a way censoring art (You're definition of art probably wouldn't cover System fo a Down admittedly, but music is most definately a form of art). Are we going to be pulling famous nudes off gallery walls next because they offend people? Put adequate warnigns up and let people choose what they want to watch.

If anyshow is not running a delay then thats just plain stupid. Do you think radio is live? No, there smart enough to run delays. So you dont fine them because it was a slip up. And when the "slip Up" happens next week?

Firstly you dont tell over half of your listeners to just change the channel. Second its not censorship. Its the station following the rules that they have signed. Thats not censorship. I have no problem with System of a down, but I do now.. That was totaly tasteless and I can't see anyway they would of not none they couldn't say those words.

No, but if you start bringing those nude pictures into my house for my child to see then we will have a problem

I just think there are greater vulgarities that need to be dealt with. SNL is obscene in content. Funny, I enjoy it, but it is obscene. Adults and clearminded youth should be able to watch obscene things because they can handle it. There are vulgarities in the world that are killing people. We should be getting po'd about that. Just my opinion.

The F bomb is disrespectful and insulting. I do use it in "my fits of madness at times", but not in public and certainly not on TV. I hate the movies that think they have to say that word 50,000 times to get a point across. I hate to hear teenagers use the word as the same thing as using this and that or him or her....it just shows the ignorance of the person using the word. Like people trying to use "big" words when they have no idea what there meaning is.....don't try to impress me or your friends by using that word..it only makes you look bad.

NBC should be fined heavily for letting that slip...as Chad (I believe said) there is a time delay on all network TV! Say it all you on on HBO, Cinemax....that is not public broadcasting and children are not likely to be watching those channels.

Think about trying to explain to a 5 or 6 year old what the F bomb means....it ain't easy...and kids are very easily the best mimics in the world....think about your child saying it to his/her teacher....

I wonder how I will ever be able to explain that to my kids, when I have them. That's going to be the hard part. Not sheltering them from words, or even sexuality. How am I going to tell them that the good prosper and the wicked suffer, that the innocent are slaughtered, that good men do nothing, that in many places men die for words and beliefs? If they watch SNL instead of reading books before they learn those greater vulgarities of our and every age, then I will have failed.
