John,
You dodged a bullet. Plain and simple. Because no matter who was right and who was wrong, when you - as you say, retaliated- you opened yourself and the store up to possible trouble. If the woman had wanted to take it farther, she could have pointed to your reaction and called you all kind of names. It doesn't matter that none of them is true. To get her off their backs, Walmart could have let you go.
My son has worked in retail and we've seen similar situations happens.
You were very lucky. The next time, some foulmouth jerk pops off, there are a few things you can do. You can either say, "Yes Ma'am" or "Yes Sir" each time the person comes up for air. Or you can just stand there, patiently and when they are done, say something like, "I'm so sorry, I didn't quite catch that, Would you mind repeating that?" Or, of course, "Let me get the Manager for you. I think we need some help here from Store Management and Security."
What you don't ever want to do is put yourself in a position where you have to explain yourself and your behavior later on. The sad fact is that people who go shopping are sometimes real jerks. They take out their anger and frustration on innocent bystanders and store employees.
It would be a shame if one of those type of people cost you your job.
Just my 2 cents.
