A disturbing survey about American High School Education :(

Survey: High School Fails to Engage Students (USA Today, May 8)
A majority of high school students in the USA spend three hours or less a week preparing for classes yet still manage to get good grades, according to a study released by researchers at Indiana University in Bloomington, who surveyed more than 90,000 high school students in 26 states.

Oh, I compltely believe it. When I was teaching at U.G.A, some of the students were virtually phoning it in. I happened to be a tough grader, but so many of the students were rudely awakened by finding out that college was not just 4 years of partying, with a $20-30,000 bar tab. The attrition rate in the first year indicated the lack of seriousness and preparation. Then again, I taught Math, and that was a rude awakening for even some of the "5'ers" and IntBac students.

My son didn't fit that mold as he spent much time on homework-of course he also finished 30 semester units of College before completing HS. This Summer he will be teaching a Natural Science Freshman course at the UofA (he's a grad student in Atmospheric Sciences and also a TA for a Junior level Met course).

That was certain in my HS... I took a college english course in HS... and I did receive college credit. However, I felt in HS, everything was spoonfed... teachers repeated told you that homework was due... and I felt I really wasn't challenged. Some classes yes, and a resounding rest of the classes...no. I was high honors throughout Junior and senior year and now I'm graduating from UWGB....GPA is NO where near a 4.0, hell, its not even near a 3.0... 2.7 to be exact, yes it could be better, but C's get degrees too!
