Jim Lushine's 2005 Hurricane Forecast

#1 Postby TampaFl » Thu May 12, 2005 4:33 pm

Attended an interesting workshop today at the Governor's Hurricane Conferance in Tampa titled "2004 - A Season To Remember". Dr. Jack Bevan, Hurricane Speacialist with the NHC, reveiwed the 2004 season, more specificly, Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan & Jeanne that impacted Florida. He was followed by Steve Letro, MIC, NWS, Jacksonville, FL. Steve reveiwed the impacts of the four hurricanes on the Jacksonville area and N.E Florida. Then Jim Lushine, WCM, NWS, Miami, Fl. gave an interesting satistacle overview of all the tropical cyclones & hurricanes that have impacted the Florida peninsula from 1851 - 2004. He then talked about the pattern of dry May rainfall for Southeast Florida only (using the cities of Miami, Ft lauderdale, & West Palm Beach) & the corrolation of hurricanes impacting the state. very interesting to say the least. And with his statistacle analysis of past rainfall for SE Fl. he has come up with his 2005 Hurricane Forecast. Quoting JIm:

WET IN MAY - LETS ALL SAY HURRAY! :D :D

MAY IS DRY - I RETIRE IN JULY!

Jim said he will be retiring this summer after spending 42 years forecasting. We wish him well and happiness in his retirement.

One last thing he mentioned: This is one forecast that he will not have to verify    . He will leave that up to someone else.

Not after some of the information I looked up..Redardless, I dont say hurray no matter a wet May or no Bermuda High today..I live in Dade County Florida,a region that has seen its share of hurricanes..They've come in all strengths & sizes..They've come after wet Mays & dry Mays..They've come with or without the help of the Bermuda High..For as long as there are hurricanes on this planet & as long as I live on a peninsula next to 87 degree waters,I'll refuse to see HURRAY IN MAY!

Sorry Jim Lushine...MAYBE NEXT TIME!!.

I would venture a guess that Jim Lushine is retiring in July like he predicted. This May has not been as dry as others.
