This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

What's the difference between Sea Surface/ Water Temp?

#1 Postby HouTXmetro » Mon May 16, 2005 1:01 pm

I was just checking the the Weather Channels web site maps and they had a map for water temps and a seperate map for sea surface temps. Is there a difference?

Seems like it would be the same thing ... maybe a different thickness in the column or something ...

Could you give the direct links to the maps, and maybe I can figure out what they're doing?

Haven't looked but the difference is likely this:

1) SST is probably satellite-derived and covers the entire ocean...

2) The water temp map is likely directly measured with a thermometer coastal stations..intended for people going to the beach.

Yes..or water temperatures closer to a beach. Like a satellite image...you can see alot, but when you zoom in, you can see more.

Thanks guys, I was wondering because the water temps and sea surface temperature maps aren't adding up.
