5.2 Quake shakes Guatemala

Coinsidence that a storm is heading their way or may make landfall nearby and then this quake occurs.I can imagine how the people are reacting to this as they are evacuating and preparing for the arrival of Adrian. So far no reports of casualties as information is little.

Well, this should give the folks down there quite a scare.
An earthquake, then a TS/hurricane

5.2 is a moderate quake, and in a country with numerous volcanoes it's practically a non-event.

I wouldn't make much of this. If you are in a sturdy bed at night when a 5.2 hits, you may feel a slight bump. It's doubtful that anything will fall from a shelf.

Most Californians wouldn't take a 5.2 too seriously, but in Guatamala it could be horrendous.

Yep, first the quake, then the cane, then the floods, then the diseases after the storm - it could be horrible down there by weeks end.

Unfortunally yes that may well be the case.

There are 30,000+ 5.2 quakes around the world each year. Yes, you can feel them. But they rarely cause any significant damage. If you are living in an area with very unstable soil you might see some minor foundation cracking, and it "is" possible that something will fall from a shelf, but not likely.

A 7.2 quake is 100 times as powerful as a 5.2, and you don't get great quakes until at or above 8, which is almost a thousand times the intensity of 5.2. And don't forget, the 5.2 is at the epicenter. The intensity will likely be below 5 just a few miles from there.

A 9.5 quake (like the tsumami-causer off the coast of Indonesia) has more 20,000 times the power of a 5.2.

If that 9.5 had originated on land rather than at the ocean floor some 50-60 miles off shore, large and extremely heavy objects would have been tossed violently into the air. Only the most reinforced buildings specifically designed to withstand extremely strong earthquakes would be left standing at all.

I've been in quakes above 5.0 on multiple occasions. You don't get a sense of Armaggedon until it gets above somewhere around 6. At 5.0 a quake can be long-lasting, but those are pretty rare, and if they occur they don't jiggle your guts too much. Mostly a 5.0 presents itself as a rolling vibration that you can hear for quite a few seconds before it hits your location.

Imagine a 9.5 epicentered in your back yard... Quake intensity is logarithmic. A quake of 7 is 100 times as powerful as a 5.

A 5.2 is mostly a nonevent. If it got up to the 6's then Guatemala would be in trouble.

I wouldn't want to be in a high-rise at 4.5. The sway might make me throw up.

No, but my daughter survived the infamous 1989 San Francisco Bay quake that crippled the city (above 7.5 I think). She was in a downtown skyscraper and didn't make it home across the bay for two days. Now THAT was scary.
