Sounds as if that entire group makes an extremely strong case for chemical castration, if not actual physical neutering.

That would prevent repeat offender status, for sure.

First off -- they don't need *that* part of their anatomy nor do they always use that part during the offense. Second -- not all offenders are male, so how ya gonna fix that?

Authorities say dogs, cats, children abused in "cult-like" setting

04:00 PM CDT on Thursday, May 19, 2005

Associated Press

PONCHATOULA, La. -- Within the walls of Hosanna Church in this southeastern Louisiana town, children, dogs and cats were sexually abused by a minister and his "cult-like" group of members, authorities alleged.

So far, four people -- including a sheriff's deputy -- have been jailed and authorities say as many as a dozen adults may have been involved in victimizing as many as 24 children, ranging in age from infants to teens.

The case broke when church pastor Louis Lamonica walked into the sheriff's office Monday and allegedly started talking about the crimes and his involvement and giving the names of others.

"He said he was educating the children in sexual exploits and how to have sex," said Livingston Parish sheriff's Detective Stan Carpenter. "We didn't know how to take it. The man just came in off the street."

Lamonica, 45, was arrested and booked on two counts of aggravated rape and one count of crime against nature.

A day later, authorities acting on information provided by Lamonica arrested 24-year-old sheriff's Deputy Christopher Blair Labat on counts of aggravated rape and malfeasance. He was fired and placed on a jailhouse suicide watch.

Later Tuesday, Austin Bernard, 36, who authorities said worked with the youth group at the church, was charged with allegedly forcing a girl under the age of 13 to perform a sex act. Then came the arrest of Allen R. Pierson, 46, who lived in an apartment on the church complex and was accused of raping a girl who was 9 or 10.

Labat apparently once lived in one of three apartments at the complex, as did Bernard, said Chuck Reed, a spokesman for the Tangipahoa Parish sheriff.

All were jailed without bond. Rape of a child under 13 carries a possible death sentence in Louisiana. Reed said he did not believe any of those arrested had hired attorneys.

Ponchatoula, located about 40 miles north of New Orleans on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain, is known for its rustic shopping district and antique stores and as the home of the annual Louisiana strawberry festival.

The investigation that shook this town of about 5,000 opened five weeks ago when a woman called from Columbus, Ohio, saying she had fled from Louisiana out of fear for her child after learning about the sex practices of some of the Hosanna Church's members.

"There are probably more than a dozen persons of interest beyond the four that are under arrest and there may be twice that many victims involved," Reed said.

Some of those being investigated are parents of the victims, who either knew about the alleged abuse or harmed their own children, authorities said.

Not all of the church members knew about the alleged sex acts, which authorities believe began in 1999 and likely ended when the church closed its doors to the general public around 2003. The alleged acts apparently took place in classrooms on the church property and not in the sanctuary.

"Apparently some of the members of the church probably spun off from what was a legitimate church and kind of formed what you and I might call a cult, and did cult-like things," Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said.

Edwards said the group used dogs and cats in some of the alleged acts, but he did not elaborate.

Reed said Hosanna Church was founded by Lamonica's father, who died years ago, and was once affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Authorities suspect the alleged abuse began after the younger Lamonica took over the church, it left the Assemblies of God and a large number of its members left, Reed said.

Authorities searched the church Tuesday night and turned two computers and a carpet sample over to state police. The FBI is assisting in the investigation because of the possibility that some of the alleged acts were taped and child pornography laws would apply.

Three more arrests tonight. The preacher's wife, and also the woman in Ohio who made the complaint and her husband who is still in Louisiana. How can so many people be so whacked out! When I started the thread I called it disturbing out of a loss of words. Did not know of any other way to describe it. More arrests to come.

Eight now arrested as probe expands
Officials fear 30 victims or more; additional arrests anticipated

12:36 PM CDT on Friday, May 20, 2005

WWLTV.com

Three women, including the wives of two men arrested in connection with an alleged cult-like child sex abuse ring were arrested Thursday night as the investigation into the activities at the Hosanna Church near Ponchatoula continued to unearth ugly allegations. Investigators said the crimes appeared to be part of satanic rituals.

Robin Lamonica, the wife of former Hosanna pastor Louis Lamonica was arrested on one count of aggravated rape of a boy under the age of 13, and Nicole Bernard, the wife of jailed former church worker Austin Bernard was picked up by the FBI in Ohio and charged with aggravated rape of a juvenile.

Also arrested late Thursday night was 54-year-old Lois Ann Mawbry on charges of obstruction of justice, failure to report a felony and accessory after the fact to aggravated rape.

In addition, 21-year-old Paul Fontenot, who lived near the Ponchatoula area, was arrested on similar charges.

The arrests bring the total of those charged in the alleged child sex abuse ring to eight. Investigators said they feared the number of victims could go as high as 30, ranging in age from one-year-old to 16.

Seven agencies are working on the case, including the FBI, which said Thursday it was looking into the possibility of Internet stuff. Three computers have been seized from the church, and another was seized from a person questioned on Thursday.

Investigators with the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s office said the bizarre events began unfolding when a woman from Ohio, now identified as Nicole Bernard, called to say that her children had been abused and that she had fled to Ohio in fear of their lives.

Bernard’s call was placed about five weeks ago and launched an investigation that suddenly got an abrupt boost when Louis Lamonica walked into the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office and began talking, according to investigators. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edward said Lamonica spoke about having sex with children and teaching them to have sex with each other and with animals.

Lamonica’s alleged confession and statements led to the arrests of 24-year old Chris Labat, a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputy and Austin Bernard, the former youth coordinator at the church on charges of the aggravated rape of a juvenile. Late Wednesday night Allen R. Pierson, 46, was arrested on similar charges.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edward said the number of arrests would increase and the number of victims could grow past two dozen. He said the alleged crimes began sometime in 1999 and continued until as late as six months ago.

Neighbors of the Hosanna Church described it as a once vibrant and thriving house of worship that saw its members dwindle to a scant few under the guidance of Lamonica.

Many described bizarre events and sounds that came from the compound.

A former church member said that in recent years, the church, where Lamonica's father once served as pastor, had dwindled to only a few secretive members and the younger Lamonica had split with his family, not allowing his mother to see her grandchildren or enter the church.

"He put a restraining order on this wonderful woman and simply refused to reconcile," said Kitty Morrison, who once taught when Hosanna Church had a school. "She hasn't seen the children in two years or more. People asked him to reconcile with his mother, who was heartbroken. His father influenced thousands of lives, including my brother, and helped him enter the ministry."
