Anyone from MN here?

#1 Postby creisored » Fri May 20, 2005 10:58 am

With the flood watch posted for NW MN tonight and the talk of the MCS in the northern plains tonight/Saturday, just thought I'd find out if there's anyone else in my area??
:?:

From NWS Duluth discussion

HEIGHTS WILL BEGIN FALLING IN THE NORTHERN PLAINS TONIGHT...AS
A SHORTWAVE STRENGTHENS AND BEGINS TO DEEPEN. STRONG H5 DIVERGENCE
BETWEEN A JET SEGMENT IN THE MANITOBA LAKES REGION LATER TONIGHT
AND A MUCH STRONGER JET STREAK MOVING THROUGH THE NORTHERN ROCKIES
WILL RESULT IN WIDESPREAD AND STRONG UPPER LEVEL DIVERGENCE.
HEIGHTS WILL FALL...RESULTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN MCS ACROSS
THE NORTHERN PLAINS. STILL SOME QUESTION AS TO THE EVOLUTION
AND PATH OF THE MCS...BUT BASED ON GFS ENSEMBLE MEMBERS...IT
SHOULD MOVE ACROSS NORTHERN MINNESOTA. WILL HAVE LIKELY POPS
WEST TONIGHT...AND SPREAD ACROSS THE REST OF THE CWA ON SATURDAY.
PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES REACH AROUND 1.30 INCHES ON SATURDAY
SO COULD BE SOME MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN SPOTS.

I'm from northern Iowa... And we are already under a flood warnings from the past weeks rain. We are expected to recieve a large amount of rain with the upcoming severe threats...

Flooding will be a concern along much of the northern plains...

Oh, yes, I can relate! In Northern MN we've really gotten soaked the last few weeks. The same thing keeps happening with these systems- they come in from the Dakotas and just seem to get hung up. I've been watching the IA flood postings and I'm sure if the events this weekend track your way, it's sure not going to help.

Although, living in Northern MN isn't the best location for severe weather (which I really get into, badly!), so I get excited when storms finally come. I grew up in southern MN where it's much more active!

Updated discussion from Duluth NWS:

THE REAL STORY IS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT WHEN A STRONGER SHORT WAVE AND
SURFACE COLD FRONT MOVE INTO THE REGION FROM THE WEST. NAM PROFILES
FOR SATURDAY AFTERNOON INDICATE A LARGE AMOUNT OF SHEAR. BASICALLY
SOUTHERLY WINDS NEAR 20 KNOTS OFF THE SURFACE TURN WESTERLY AT 60
KNOTS BY 500 MB. NAM 0-1KM BULK SHEAR APPROACHES 30 KNOTS WITH 0-6KM
BULK SHEAR REACHING 55 KNOTS. 0-3KM ML CAPE INCREASES TO OVER 100
J/KG OVER THE WESTERN CWA LATE IN THE AFTERNOON WITH 0-3KM VGP
VALUES ABOVE 0.25. DCAPE IS FORECAST TO BE BETWEEN 800-1200 J/KG.
HENCE...ALL MODES OF SEVERE WEATHER MUST BE CONSIDERED FOR SATURDAY
AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
NAM AND GFS ARE INDICATING THE SHORT WAVE
TURNING INTO A CLOSED LOW OVER THE CWA ON SUNDAY AND THEN MOVING
SLOWLY SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE WESTERN GREAT LAKES SUNDAY NIGHT AND
MONDAY. THIS SCENARIO IS TIED TO THE REX BLOCK ALOFT DEVELOPING
ACROSS EASTERN NORTH AMERICA WITH HIGH PRESSURE OVER FAR EASTERN
CANADA AND LOW PRESSURE CUTTING OFF OVER NEW ENGLAND/EASTERN GREAT
LAKES. THEREFORE...RAISED POPS A LITTLE SUNDAY NIGHT AND HELD ON TO
SOME SHOWERS OVER NORTHWEST WI MONDAY MORNING.

Well, I live about 45 miles NE of Fargo/Moorhead. We have flood warnings here too; it has been raining off an on since around 7:30, but since my rain gauge disappeared I haven't the foggiest idea how much we have gotten so far.
