For New Orleans weather I like Bob Breck. If you ever happen to check the weather out of Biloxi's WLOX watch for a guy named Mike Reader. He is a pretty knowledgable meterologist however he seems alittle excitable. He makes a TS sounds like a Cat 4 at times. But for the local MS Gulf Coast area he is about the best we have.

Reader's got quite a background. Used to fly with the Hurricane Hunters. I remember Elena being his first storm that he was on the air throughout. Sorta like baptism by fire!!

Mike Reader began his career in television in 1983 as weekend weathercaster at WLOX. In 1988 he retired from the U.S. Navy and was given the additional duties of covering morning weather at the station. In 1989 he was promoted to Chief Meteorologist.

Mike as been working in weather for more than 30 years. He started his career in the U.S. Navy in 1968. During a 20 year career in the Navy he forecasted and observed weather around the world.

One of his most challenging assignments was with the Hurricane Hunters. He flew into numerous storms, collecting the data that the National Hurricane Center used to issue their forecasts.

While working as a meteorologist at WLOX Mike has worked two hurricanes that hit South Mississippi; Hurricane Elena in 1985, and Hurricane Georges in 1998. In both of those storms the eye of the hurricanes passed directly over the television station.

Mike Reader is the only meteorologist on the Gulf Coast that has been forecasting weather for more than thirty years. He's qualified as an in-flight hurricane observer. Mike has his certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. His weathercast has received the American Meteorological Society's seal of approval.

Mike has been married for 35 years and has one son and three grandchildren.

You can e-mail mike at mreader@wlox.com .

"Baptism by fire" I couldnt have said it better myself. My very first experience was with Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and for a while it was predicted to hit close to the MS/LA state line. Mike Reader was doing 24 hour coverage on WLOX. Granted Hurricane Andrew was a very dangerous storm and deserved to be treated as such but Mike Reader had me so worked up and in such a state I thought I was having a nervous breakdown. I was 24 yrs old, from a different state and my husband was deployed, I had only lived here in the area for 2 months. I wrote a last will and testament, by the next morning when the storm had moved further west toward Morgan City and we were only predicted to get some wind and rain I was still convinced of my imminent death. Now I can look back at it and laugh but at the time it was terrifying. Now if I had to rewrite my last will and testament again I would leave Mike Reader the link to this site. LOL

I always thought Nash Roberts was highly overrated. I get my weather from Bob Breck. There's no one else in the city who even comes close. Carl Arredondo would be my second choice. But I think I learn more and get more weather from the internet than anyone else. There are tons of great pros and amateurs that you can hash things out with on sites like H-City, flhurricane and Storm 2k. I trust guys like Don Sutherland, MGC, Air Force Met, Rob Mann and Jason Kelley more than I trust most anyone. I also trust my own instincts and analyses.

John Gumm, even though he is new in New Orleans, I think he is one of the upcoming greats. I do have a friendship with John, therefore some is based off of friendship.

He is very knowledgable, he has done everything from Chasing to being in North Carolina in 99' Hurricane Season. He started his own chase program in College and is now continued on at the University of Valparaiso.

You are absolutely right! Reader is the only one who made a good call on Georges.

I don't know. He was an independent, and I'd still flick to Channel 4 to get his takes, but the way some people worshipped him was ridiculous. For the record, I used to see him downtown all time after he retired, and he was as smiling in person as he used to be on television.

We don't get WLOX here on Cable, so I don't know any of the forecasters over on the coast.

I also like Gumm and the fact that he interacts with his fans and posts discussions of storms. Former Channel 8 guy Kenny Aucoin (who I think is in Columbia, SC - or was for a while) was pretty good too. One of my secretaries has a line into him and he usually sends us his thoughts.

And I gotta give props out to WJHG Channel 7 in Panama City Beach, Jason Kelly. Jason is one of the best forecasters on the Gulf Coast. He posts on flhurricane during threats. I showed up at the studio one day with my boys to say hello and meet him, and he was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet (along with being a top notch weatherman).

Bob Breck cracked me up when Lili was approaching Louisiana - it
was during the Major League Baseball playoffs, and Fox 8 and Breck
decided to stick with a live broadcast on the weather and they did not show the baseball game.

"We've got some people calling in wanting us to put the baseball game on, NO! We've got a Hurricane about to make landfall and that's much
more important than some baseball game"

so true.

I thought David Benard of WWL was good but since he is leaving in July, I think John Gumm will do just as good of a job.

For tv I like Channel 4 - Carl, David and John. b/t/w - I THINK Nash is still around in an "advisory" capacity.

Otherwise - it's Mike Watkins.

Wow I only hear good things about this guy(David Bernard), I am glad he is coming down here to Miami & on top of that he will be on the same station as Bryan Norcross. 8-)

WFOR-MIAMI has made improvements to their team while the other stations down here have regressed. They have alot of good mets there.

Oh well this thread is about New Orleans METS so I'll buzz off. :)

Nash Jr. sold his weather business in 2000. He retired to "go fishing", literally.
