A day of Breaking News:

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Wed May 25, 2005 9:10 am

Well, from yesterday, the metroplex isn't safe from vehicles crashing into buildings. They had an alcoholic crashing into a house in Oak Cliff, another drunk crashing into another house in Grapevine critically injuring a teen, and this:

Underage driver crashes into daycare center

By CHRIS HEINBAUGH / WFAA ABC 8

PLEASANT GROVE, Texas - Police said an unlicensed teenage driver was behind the wheel of a car that slammed into a crowded daycare center in Pleasant Grove Tuesday afternoon, injuring eight children.

Sixty children were inside the storefront facility in the 10000 block of Lake June Road when the car, a white Kia, jumped the curb outside the Dream House Learning Center around 4 p.m.

Instantly, the Dream House turned into a nightmare.

"The car just came through this window. I just seen it just blast through the window," said Karla Jackson.

"It just jumped the curb and went all the way down," said daycare center owner Blynitha McGilbra. "It went through the window and came straight through my daycare."

Two children were trapped under the car. Heroes from a neighboring barber shop rushed in to help.

"We didn't have no other choice but to lift up the car and pull them from under there," said Pierre Caudell.

"One little girl said, 'Help me! Help me! Help me!' So I pulled her out," Leatha Bucanan added.

Dallas Fire-Rescue medic Ray Schufford was one of the first to arrive at the chaotic scene. "It was a pretty horrific sight to see a whole side of a building that's caved in and kids just crying and screaming and everyone not knowing what's going to happen," he said.

Seven of the injured children, ranging in age from 2- to 10-years-old, were rushed to Children’s Medical Center Dallas for treatment. They were treated for minor injuries and released by Tuesday night.

An eighth child was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital's burn unit. The parents requested that no further information be released.

"One of the main focuses of the workers here and the officers was to get all the parents reunited with the kids that were still here," said Dallas Police Lt. Jan Easterling. "That happened actually pretty fast, so that was a good thing, especially for the parents who were looking for their kids."

Dallas police said the driver of the car—a 14-year-old girl—could face up to eight felony counts of injury to a child. Police may also cite a 24-year-old woman for letting the girl get behind the wheel.

Investigators said the teenager hit a curb as she tried to turn into the shopping center where the daycare is located. She lost control and careened into the building.

Police said there were a total of five people in the car, including a 15-year-old, an 11-month-old infant and two adults.

WFAA-TV reporter Janet St. James, Dallas Morning News reporter Holly Yan and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

A series of explosions took place at I-20 and I-45 yesterday afternoon:

18-wheeler explodes on I-20

DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - Traffic on Interstate 20 in Southeast Dallas ground to a halt Tuesday afternoon after an 18-wheeler burst into flames.

The truck blocked all westbound lanes of I-20 on the bridge over Interstate 45.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews were on scene trying to extinguish the 18-wheeler and several areas of grass near the bridge that also caught fire. Multiple explosions could be seen coming from the truck.

All westbound traffic on I-20 remains shut down at I-45, and continued to move very slowly in other directions on both highways.

The driver of the truck was taken to Parkland Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. Reports indicated the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

There was no word on whether the bridges at the interchange sustained structural damage, or when the interchange would fully reopen.

A 14-YEAR OLD????!!!! :grr:

When I first heard the details late yesterday(about not stopping), I figured it was probably some elderly person or someone hard of hearing/seeing. Didn't expect an underaged driver.

The good news is that the overpasses are still standing and safe to open. Suffered a little smoke damage from the explosions.

They also needed to replace the guard rail before they can open that interstate.

When a truck exploded on the Veterans Expressway in Tampa a few years ago it damaged the overpass and it had to be torn down and rebuilt. Due to that I had to find another route to my daylily club meeting. That was the exit I would take to go to the meeting.

So far this week, there had been 3 facilities severely damaged by out of control drivers.

The 14-year-old's uncle was furious at her. I don't blame him.

Thanks for that link. It shows why children shouldn't be driving cars.

It was a 14 year-old girl who was behind the wheel of the car that plowed into the daycare.

It seems that the breaking stories don't stop there.

Truck runs off freeway into yard

DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - An 18-wheeler drove off an access road paralleling a Dallas freeway just before noon Wednesday, narrowly missing a house.

The truck, with empty flatbed trailer, was headed northbound on the R.L. Thornton Freeway access road between Beckley Avenue and Saner Avenue when it careened off the road and into a back yard, coming to a stop just inches from the home's back door. However, the truck caused damage to a shed and a car parked behind the house.

The driver received minor injuries; no one in the house was injured.

Police are still on the scene trying to determine how the driver lost control.

I take it then that it must have been the uncle's car involved in the daycare accident...because it says a 24 year-old woman may also be cited for having allowed the 14 year-old behind the wheel.

I would have thought the same as well.

We had an elderly lady that drove her car directly into a group of children waiting to be picked up by parents at an elementary school here back a few years ago. About 15 children were injured, some seriously. Fortunately all ended up well. The lady was never charged, to my recollection.

Here is a pic from CNN when it happened:

It was in November 2002.

And now we just found out Houston lost the bid for the 2009 Super Bowl.

Thanks a lot, Janet! :grr:

Driver, 14, in custody after day care crash (Updated)

By BERT LOZANO and BRAD WATSON / WFAA ABC 8

PLEASANT GROVE, Texas - A Southeast Dallas day care center remained closed Wednesday, 24 hours after an underage driver slammed a car through the front window.

Eight children at the Dream House Learning Center at Lake June Road and Masters Road were injured; a 10-year-old girl with burns was the only one who remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon.

The 14-year-old girl who was driving the car was being held Wednesday at the Juvenile Justice Center, charged with eight counts of injury to a child.

Savannah Higgman, 13, was a passenger in the white Kia, and told News 8 that she and friends were on a joy ride in in the neighborhood after the driver had gotten permission.

"She asked her cousin if she could drive the car ... and she gave (her) the keys," Higgman said.

Higgman, who escaped unharmed, said the girls got distracted while talking and listening to the radio, and the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brakes while trying to turn.

"We were driving around here, and I guess when she got on the big street, she panicked," Higgman said.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and went crashing into the day care; Higgman said she was so upset she ran home immediately after the incident.

Higgman also said car owner Lasandra Bass's baby was in the car, but Bass, 24, said Higgman's allegations were untrue.

"I could never give a 14-year-old permission to take the car," Bass said, claiming that her cousin stole the vehicle. "I left the keys in the car, and everyone was sitting outside listening to the radio. I went in the house to use the telephone, and when I came back out the car was gone."

Despite the different stories, the two are glad no one died in the accident.

Police have given Bass a citation for allowing an unlicensed person to drive her car.

The owner of Dream House told News 8 on Wednesday she doesn't know when she'll reopen at the location because of the damage inside. While she works with her insurance company to get back in business, customers are working to find other care.

Monica Tutt was also grateful her one-year-old daughter Alexsis wasn't hurt - but along with the day care the car also wrecked Monica's school schedule. With no place to take her child, she missed her beautician classes at JW's Beauty Academy next door to Dream House.

"She doesn't want to cooperate - she likes being at day care," Tutt said of her daughter. "It's kind of hard missing school, though."

The crash left parents and caregivers at home with their children, or scrambling to find alternate care. Tutt hopes the center isn't closed too long.

She said, "I will take her back, because it's not their fault, you know? It's just something that happened."

But others aren't sure they'll return. Madonna Brown's granddaughter was injured by glass, and Brown said she'll urge her daughter to move the toddler to another day care.

"I think that's a dangerous place for a day care to be in a shopping area, with no borders if cars come up on the curb," Brown said.

But the state agency that licenses day care centers said regulations don't consider location a big factor.

"It's something that we'll take into account, but there's not a set guideline as to where you can have a day care," said Marissa Gonzales of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

State officials are helping the owner set up temporarily at a church on Interstate 35, but plans aren't firm yet.

I have given up watching the 11 PM news, as it is generally 10 minutes of murders, rapes, burglaries, and other sundry tragedies. If one took the 11 PM news here seriously, Orlando would sound like the worst city in the world.

Truck runs into yard, kills puppies (Updated)

DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - An 18-wheeler drove off an access road paralleling a Dallas freeway just before noon Wednesday, running into a dog house and killing 10 puppies before coming to rest inches short of a residence.

Police said the truck, with empty flatbed trailer, was headed northbound on the R.L. Thornton Freeway access road between Beckley Avenue and Saner Avenue when it careened off the road and into the home's back yard. A neighbor told News 8 the truck ran over the puppies and also caused damage to a car parked behind the house.

The driver received minor injuries; no one in the house was injured.

Police are still on the scene trying to determine how the driver lost control.

WHAT? ANOTHER CRASH?!?!?!?!

Car crashes into Desoto daycare

DESOTO, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - A car crashed into a daycare center in Desoto Friday morning, but no one was hurt.

Police said the accident took place at Desoto Private School, 301 East Beltline Road. Details of how it happened were not immediately available.

School officials told News 8 that the daycare facilities were not operating in that part of the building when the crash occurred.

Desoto Private School offers programs for three-year-olds through sixth grade. Daycare services are provided for students, according to the school's Web site.

Friday's incident in Desoto is eerily similar to a crash on Tuesday, when a 14-year-old driver slammed into a crowded daycare center in Southeast Dallas. Eight young people were hurt.
