Home Depot Misinforming Public - Saffir Simpson Scale

#1 Postby CentralFlGal » Wed May 25, 2005 4:59 pm

There are a number of threads in our Storm2k community that stress the importance of proper storm information (i.e. amateur forecasters’ predictions on possible paths) so casual users will know when to take action and/or where to go for the correct information.

Home Depot has taken this to new levels.

Their 2005 Hurricane Preparation Guide, sponsored by The Weather Channel, lists the Saffir Simpson Scale BACKWARDS.

Even with last year’s busy season here in Florida, we still enjoy a steady stream of new residents from all over the country. When they open up to page 4, here is what they see:

Category.............Winds (MPH).........Typical Storm Surge
1........................> 155..................>18’
2........................131 – 155............ 13’ – 18’
3........................111 – 130.............9’ – 12’
4........................96 – 110...............6’ – 8’
5........................74 – 94................4’ – 5’

This is one mistake that should never have survived proofreading. Maybe someone in our community is in a position to remedy this… somehow.

Hope they didn't print too many of those, 'cause they're going to have to do that over.

They at least got cat 3 right. People will leave for a 1 and stay for a 5. I hope most people will realize that it is a typo

That's just inconceivable, and since it's also sponsored by the Weather Channel, it's just putting more gravel over their grave!

When you caught the error, did you inform Home Depot?

It probably is best to let them know with the exact brochure or guide in hand so you can provide a form number or other pertinent information. I'll pick one up and do it as soon as I can get out to Home Depot-I suggest others should do the same. The more complaints they get, the more likely they are to pull it quickly and get it reprinted.

I spoke with the manager at the South Lakeland (FL) Home Depot. The guides are in fact printed wrong( I have one to scan). New guides are being shipped to the appropriate Home Depot stores today and tomorrow.

The new guides will have an orange triangle in the upper right hand corner of the cover, indicating that they have been revised.

Hurricane? Oh, don't worry, dear... the man on TV says it's only a Cat 5. We'll be fine!

I think it's a marketing ploy, there are more lower CAT storms than there are higher so they will get more business, even for CAT 1 storms
