It was on channel 3 news tonight, They mentioned that it had never been told before. Sue Straughn was saying that the little boy was having a hard time because he saw some cars on the bridge behind them but when he looked again, they had disappeared!!mobilebay wrote:WOW!!!!!!! I never knew about this at all.![]()

I must be getting jaded in my old age. To say the least I am happy that these people survived the ordeal. However, I find it difficult to believe a LEO from Miami would continue to drive into an obvious Hurricane, even if they thought they might be past it once into AL. It just seems totally irresponsible to me. I do understand the desire and need to get to the funeral they were heading towards as I would want to do the same, but I would not endanger my family by continuing into a maelstrom. Ice angel has this been verified as a true story by Wear or any other news agencies in the area?

Also... WHY is this coming out over EIGHT months after Ivan hit?
That is the other thing that stood out to me.

Maybe they didn't feel like telling anyone until now (the article said it was their first time back to the site). Maybe the writer thought people wouldn't pay attention until hurricane season neared. Maybe half an 18-wheeler in the bay was more attention-getting than some piddly little car.
Excitement sells, and it's possible the story was just not 's*xy' enough without the dramatic revisit of the scene of the...well, whatever you want to call it. I don't think there's anything nefarious behind the delay in reporting it.

WEARtv had the family on tape last night. (except the mother), telling of their experiance.
Thanks for the reply, it just seemed "strange" to me.
I guess because it just seems like nothing like that can happen but evidently it did.

word just came out this morning that they plan to close the I-10 bridge in the event of a hurricane. Wow, that should be fun, eliminate one of the only ways out!

I was actually surprised they didn't shut it down during Ivan. The 331 Bridge in Walton County closes when they get wind gusts over 45mph because the causeway is less than 5' above Choctawhatchee Bay in spots and they worry about overwash. The Mid Bay Bridge closes at something like 55-65mph wind gusts.
Both of those bridges are evacuation routes, and people are constantly told that the bridges close when conditions deteriorate past a certain point or that they will close at a certain time. By the point the bridges do close, you're at a point when everyone should be off the road and hunkered down anyways.

What has always given me chills, is what Galveston is going to do, if they are ever under the gun from the "Big one"
The only two ways out *45 and San Luis Toll* are closed when winds reach 45-50 mph.
Not sure what the contingency plans are, maybe GDuck or VB can elaborate, but the fact that people could essentially be "trapped" on a island, seawall or not, is quite frightening...

The New I-10 bridge is supposed to be 6 lanes.

Well... if your tail hasn't left by the time the hurricane is nailing your area, then you don't deserve to leave and clog the roads for possible emergency vehicles later on.
