Still way above normal
As Dr. Gray will have in the June Forecast, these are near the warmest SSTs on record for the Atlantic Basin.

South of 20N this is on par with Mid July!!!

Dr. Grey has already released his June forecast (see other thread), and did mention the very warm SST's. :wink:

Man, the tropical atlantic is downright toasty, and the season
hasn't started yet......

I'm baffled by this too - this is quite unusual. I've never seen SST's
in the Carribean this warm this early in the year.

Yes indeed.

And this raises the point that while a lot of discussion here has revolved around the Cape Verde season, these conditions could lead to significant homebrew development as soon as the shear relaxes. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see something nontrivial pop in the western Caribbean or Gulf as early as mid to late June.

Jan, you're probably right.

With the August-like waters, once something gets going, there's plenty of fuel. If the upper levels are good, no shear, we can see a major hurricane relatively early in the season.

I think the seafood industry will start to feel this soon. With the water so warm, people won't have to buy their crabs at the markets....they'll already be lying on the beach boiled.

Yep, the ocean is very warm right now with anomilies near the African Coast of 3.0-3.5 degrees above normal and Near the Winward Islands 2.0-2.5 degrees above Normal..Also the water temps are above normal in the GOM...Basically basin wide besides off the East Coast are water temps above normal.

Now its just a matter of time Before the SAL becomes less of a factor and shear quiets down somewhat with the Big Ridge/Dome of High Pressure AKA SE/ Bermuda Ridge setting up over the Atlantic Basin.

Also with El Nino out of the Picture Basically it looks like its going to be a pretty threatening year.

I just hope we see a storm before August this year, the wait was painfully long last year. :lol:

Even that the sea-surface temperatures are a big factor for tropical cyclone development, there are other factors that need to concur for development; wind-shear is a great example. That's a good news, but if conditions are right, OH MY GOD!

The SST off the Naples pier is 83 degrees. That might be a smidge above normal. The highest i have seen in the last five years is 91.
