Memories of last year's disastrous hurricane season in Florida drew more than 600 officials from coastal Texas communities to Beaumont on Tuesday for the state's third, and largest ever, hurricane conference.

It's a good thing. The last full evacuation here was disastrous. That was for Andew in 1992. If it hadn't turned and hit Louisiana, there would have been tons of people stuck on the highway in southern Jefferson County when it hit. When Lili was headed this way, 10 years later, they had improved the evacuation plan and although it was better, most residents didn't leave because the potential track changed while the evacuation was occurring and many realized a direct hit here was unlikely now. So it wasn't a real test to compare to Andrew in 1992.

I can't remember which year it was but there was a "train of hurricanes" in the Atlantic all at the same time. I kept thinking and worrying that they would all hit in apx. the same area. Similar to what happened in 2004. I'm praying for a lot of fish storms this year or there won't be an insurance company in Florida left to write policies.

1995 was the year of the parade of storms.
