It's probably not a matter of getting angry at someone for wanting to experience the power of a hurricane as much as it is criticizing those who don't take into account the negative externalities of what provides them with pleasure. If someone is equipped with the ability to be mobile and travel around (like storm chasers), then one would want every hurricane to be like that Hurricane Bret in 1999, which made landfall in Texas where no one lives. That would allow access to experience the power of hurricanes without associated destruction.

Others could argue that part of experiencing the full power of hurricanes is to witness what type of damage they are capable of causing, which may be why some wish them to hit developed areas. But we must remember something very important...developed areas are also populated areas, meaning that people live under or have invested in those inanimate structures. Even if one would like to witness physical destruction without wishing harm on lives, it's a fact of life that in settings like that, you can't separate the good from the bad because they are inextricably tied together. Thus, when one accesses the experience of a particular occurrence, one must consider all effects of that circumstance, both good and bad.

Never heard of that song....

You make great points but I just want to say that I would never wish harm on anyone.Whether its natural or man made I don't like to see death & destruction & human suffering. But I can't nor no human being can prevent a hurricane from forming &/or prevent it from going where it wants to go.These thing happen,I & many of you live in a region where hurricanes have stricken & will strike again. It might be you or it might be me.There is nothing you or me can do to stop it so we take the neccessary action to save our lives & property & we weather the storm..

Hurricanes are a phenomenon that happen on this planet & we are @ their mercy.

I must accept that or move to Norway if I don't want to live with them.

One thing though is that I can't pretend not to be in love with their power & aw inspiring beauty.

I agree with you Raindband. I understand a storm will go where it wants to, but when people start talking like that it bothers me. I don't like -removed-, period.

Yeah people who think like that are idiots who don't deserve the time of day..I know what I know & many here are knowledgeable people that know what they are talking about & I know who I can trust..The problem is that when the hurricanes come so do the trolls & the anarchist.I just ignore it or have good laugh. You & me know better. :)

Anyone wishing for a magor hurricane, wish again and this time rethink your answer.
I feel almost certain that anyone who went through any of the hurricanes that hit Florida last year, have changed their minds!!. Am I right? They are no fun at all..Just a plain miserable, frustrating and a very sad ordeal.

Rainband wrote:After the death and destruction of last year, how many people still hope a Cane comes there way. Don't get me wrong, I still like the "action' and the excitement from an appraoching storm if it isn't a major but I will be more than happy to watch from a far this year. I just find it funny how I read some posts and the poster finds a way to say that they are going to get a storm this year . Only Two things are certain..We will have Hurricanes this Year....Be prepared..The rest, no matter how much anyone thinks they know is guess work. Bottom line be prepared and be careful what you wish for. My area was very lucky last year and save minor power outages, we were spared last year. Ask some of our other members, aka Sandi Gulfbreezer about a major hurricane and then rethink how bad you want that "action" Just some food for thought :D

It's always puzzled the devil out of me as well. I used to think that they'd just never experienced a serious storm, and in some cases, that's probably what it is. Others ... well, I don't know if they don't own property or if they're just not all there.

I'm going to try to put this in as polite terms as I can, but I can't believe that people who have experienced a major storm can do to their area
have actually sat down and thought about just how terribly wasteful of resources these things are, if nothing else. Just *think* of the money lost through shutdowns. That's $ that would go in their pocket, then multiply that by however many lost work days. Add to that the $ spent rebuilding / repairing that would otherwise be available for enriching the economy as a whole. It doesn't matter that insurance companies pay it out, it is $ that would benefit everyone paid out through profits and circulating into the economy. But, because of these storms, the money is spent rebuilding something that was already built. What a wateful, wasteful shame.

We're about to catch up on our rainfall here. Had some rain earlier(even some thunder/lightning about 2 1/2 hours ago) with rain, rain, rain, rain, and more rain expected through Wednesday.

Very happy for your area, Brent, on some much-needed rainfall! :D
Looks like a wet time of it for here in central NC, too, at least through Friday. :)

Okay, I have read through all the replies and I feel it is time I put my 2 cents in..... :)

You ALL bring up some very good points! I joined this site the day after its inception because I am always awed by Mother Nature. I think her job is to put us mere humans in our place and to make us realize just how insignificant we can be when dealing with her force. I have lived on the Gulf Coast almost 35 years and have seen a lot of damage. Having said that, to "see" damage is one thing, to personally "experience" damage is another. I have been extremely lucky over the years until Sept. 16, 2004. I can easily understand the excitement of cane season, I feel it too even now but my feelings have changed since Ivan. I have watched death and destruction on TV during the aftermath of canes and even went to Miami after Andrew to help and witnessed it firsthand. It is heart breaking but it does not even compare to what I have gone through this past 9 months. I can feel other people's pain only to a certain extent, but personal pain is a whole different excrutiating pain. To have to throw every single thing I ever owned into a debris pile is beyond explanation in a way that people can ever understand until it is experienced. I don't get angry at those who want to experience a hurricane, I have much repsect for those who love Mother Nature as I do. All I do at this point is pray that no-one here EVER has to experience the pain I have felt this year. I have been in thier shoes and can say that to have this happen to me to this extent once in 35 years, I have been lucky. Many of my feelings have changed towards cane season but my awe and respect for Mother Nature has not changed. My prayer for anyone who has the same respect is that they can continue to respect her from afar and not have to go through what we have gone through. The chances are very high this season that there will be lives lost and cities and towns in ruin and I can honestly say that this will be the first time that I will FEEL their pain in a whole new way.
