Which name(s)of the 2005 list will be the big one(s)?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I again keep Gert and Jose as my big ones. However, I have a caveat that is bugging me, so I'll say it.

I posted it in another thread, but it's very pertinent to here too. This season may be more active than expected, and now here is where my gut comes in. At various times over the last few years, I have envisioned a hurricane (at various intensities) in the GOM. And it has always had the same name: Rita. Now, Rita is on this year's list. I certainly hope we don't get down that far, but if we do, my gut tells me Rita could be a late-season surprising big one.

In short, Gert, Jose, and maybe even Rita if we get that far are my big ones....but let's hope we don't get to the "R" storm! Still, with '95, '03, and '04 as analogs, what can we expect?

Rita? It certainly has the sound to it, doesn't it? Gert sounds like a dangeorus one. A while back, I said that I thought Emily and Jose would be the big ones, but Gert and Rita are certainly names that could go to big storms.

Gert sounds ominous and I have feared all of the "L" storms since Luis in '95 so I'll go with Lee as well.

I have a really bad feeling about this year in SW Fl and have had for months. Many areas still haven't recovered from Charlie and now we are headed into another season. There is still a lot of debris piled up and thousands of people are living in FEMA trailers not to mention all of the other FL trailers and modular homes. Many homes still have blue tarps on their roofs. I'm certain this is the case in many other areas of the state especially in the Panhandle. Not a good position to be in as June 1 approaches. Time will tell.

Considering the fact that moisture from the remnants of Tropical storm Harvey did a number on Nova Scotia, flooding wise, last time around. I'm a tad antsy for my general area seeing that name again  , even though I live, and work, in Western New Brunswick and Eastern Maine. I also have a bad feeling about the names Franklin and Philippe.

Vince and Phillipe stick out. I can imagine the newsguy being like, "Hurricane Phillpe has demolished the Bahaman Islands and it looks like the Eastern Seaboard is next. We will be feeding you live footage of the destruction as we can relay it out."

Sure enough, Dennis was a bad one. Although not for the East Coast.

Emily is the one I am mainly concerned about. During less active seasons, Emily tends to be the strongest. Not only that, but Emily has twice made landfall as a major hurricane. (1987 and 1993) Emily seems rather determined to get retired.

And sure enough, Emily made another go at retirement and it looks like 3rd time's the charm.

Katrina doesn't sound too threatening. Maybe an end of the season hurricane.

Don't feel bad... I didn't think Katrina would be a bad one either.

WRONG.

It's interesting to go back through this thread and see who picked what. Looks like I bombed on Franklin, but a lot of you correctly picked Emily to be a beast. Here are some quotes I found ineresting:

HurricaneBill wrote:Katrina doesn't sound too threatening. Maybe an end of the season hurricane.

I wish you would've been right. :(

eye of the storm wrote:I'd have to go with Katrina. Don't know why, it just jumped out at me.

Whoa.

HalloweenGale wrote:ooh franklin... I am so scared! not. that will probably be a tropical storm, not like his dead brother Floyd, which was not very much of a hurricane in the carolinas. It was extratropical, the rain fell on the left side

Hey, at least it lasted for a while...

OuterBanker wrote:I figure it will be Dennis or Emily.

OuterBanker turns the double play...

krysof wrote:I think Emily and Dennis could be double trouble

...as well as krysof!

hurricanefloyd5 wrote:I think that Franklin and Lee might be big ones i just feel it in my bones

Hahahaha. Sorry, I have to laugh at that. Not so much at Franklin, but at Lee. Turns out Lee will be the biggest dud of the season. Hey, at least he used up a name, though.

Radar wrote:I predict Gert will be the highest catagory storm in 2005. How do I know this? Because the magic 8 ball says it is so!

You might want to consider getting a new Magic 8 Ball.

zoeyann wrote:I'm going with Gert and Jose. I don't know why its just a guess

Of all the names to pick, you picked two of the Wimpy Three.

The Dark Knight wrote:Vince and Phillipe stick out.

Some might have laughed at those picks at the time, considering how far down the list those names are. But now, we're almost certain to see both of them! Will they be beasts, though? We shall see.
