Opal. Wednesday Night/Early Thursday is when it came through. Middle of the freaking night(didn't help). Ivan was equally as bad(I think) but came through during the daylight hours which made it MUCH more tolerable and besides the power flickering, it never went out(we were farther from the center too).
In terms of power outages, defintely the Blizzard of 1993. I remember being able to watch movies 6 hours after Opal moved out.
During the Blizzard, I remember walking to a friend's house(snow was over by this point but a foot was on the ground). That's ALL I remember(I was not even 5 yet), but I know the power was out for at least a day or two(we were in the city).

Same here - 1993's superstorm did it for me. Made me move to Florida!
Out of last year's 3 'canes, I think Charley was the worst since it was my first and didn't know what to expect. As Jeanne was leaving, though, my husband muttered something about how shoveling snow didn't seem so bad afterall... Nope. Nuh uh. No more.

And I remember that no name storm in 93. We had ice and snow all the way down here on the Gulf Coast! It made a mess of the outside birthday party we'd planned for my brother-in-law.
Hey, I got married that night. It was Friday march 12 , 1993.

RE:
That is a month I hope to never relive. I only visit my family and friends down there in Winter and Spring now LOL.
Worst storm at home.

My experiences have been limited so far (and I'd like to keep it that way
). On the road during my move down here, I experienced the northern edge of Georges. Here on the island, I encountered Allison.
One of my best friends in KY survived Andrew under a mattress with her sister and mom when they lived in Homestead. To this day, she still cowers during a storm.

Andrew! I really don't have anything else to compare it with. We always get very close calls and they turn away from us at the last minute. Andrew was not even a direct hit. He scraped the coast before he turned inland. And he was barely a miss. Because I remember it clearly that Andrew was supposed to come straight over Terrebonne Bay. Putting the northeast quadrent right over my house. He veered west at the last minute and hit Morgan City. But, Morgan City is only 25 miles to my due west. So, we still got winds around 100 mph.
My mom said Betsy was much worse here. She said my experience with Andrew does not even compare to Betsy. For Betsy, they got winds around 140 mph. I was not born for Betsy. So, I can't even comprehend what it was like.

I have to agree with cajungal! Andrew for me....we also got winds of 100mph, with a few gusts to 120mph, and that was loud enough! Other than that, I'd say Juan. Not for the storm experience, but for the flooding. Seeing snakes swimming through your living room in 4 feet of water just does something to you.
My mom would say Betsy. They experienced the eye. Also, a tornado picked up the trailer they were living in at the time and tossed to the next block....while they were in it. I was not born yet for Betsy.

Ivan. Although we weren't actually here to experience it, we evacuated 24 hours beforehand. On returning home...it was very un-nerving having to clear a path with your chainsaw in order to navigate through the debris to make it back to your property, not knowing if you had a house to return to or not. We were lucky, our home was intact. We stayed for erin and Opal in 1995. I know Erin wasn't considered a strong cane, but theres just something about watching trees bend in the wind and snap into like toothpicks that affects you to the point of not wanting to experience that same fury again. Opal did far less damage than either Erin or Ivan in my area, but we did stay and ride it out also. Those have been and will be the only storms I will experience first hand. I may have to yet again come home to unrecognizable surroundings caused by mother nature, but experiencing the actual devistation will be from afar, watching on tv...not watching out my own windows. Good luck to everyone this hurricane season...stay safe and don't take any chances.

I don't remember Juan much, skysummit. But, you think I would have. I was 9 and in the 4th grade. The only thing I remember is looking out the window and seeing rain. I know that a lot of Terrebonne Parish was under water. I lived in this same house in Schriever for 27 years, and we were one of the few that never, ever flooded. We were one of the lucky ones sitting high and dry why my neighbors were sandbagging because water was seeping into their homes.

Hmmm...I was also 9 years old, so we're the same age! Even at 9 though, I was helping fill sandbags (as best as I could). I remember the water pouring over the sandbags, filling up the ditches and getting higher and higher by the minute. Halloween was cancelled!

HUGO! Here in Charlotte area, we have experienced what's left of systems
from the GOM or fringes from the Atlantic side to our east. Being 200 miles from the coast, we get their remnants. But that night in Sept 89 winds were recorded at 100 mph in many locations sustained at 75. The
many hardwood trees typical of the piedmont region took a big hit as did homes close to them. Howling winds in a TS easy to deal with and marvel at. But all nighters ??? Hope never again.
