Poor local hurricane special..NBC Sw Fla.

#1 Postby TheShrimper » Wed Jun 01, 2005 7:27 pm

Local NBC affiliate here in SW Fla. did a major diservice to anyone new in the area regarding the upcoming season. Very vague in regards to pertainent information, evac. routes, detailed storm surge maps ect. Only live feed was from the chief meteoroligist , all other segments were pre recorded with the other meterologist and the tuba playing "forecaster". The representation of the various types of boarding up tecniques, really irritated me as far as the choices. While testing glass, plywood at various thicknesses for impact resistance qualities, they also had to shoot a 2x4 into a window criss crossed with duct tape. Well every one knows that the only reason, if any to put tape on a window would be to cushion the wind pressure directed on it, and if it were to succumb to the influences, it would not shatter to the extent that it would unprotected. Well these morons try to get the point across by shooting a 2x4 into the duct-taped window to prove the point. TV 20 used to do a much better job informing the populous before each impending season. I think WINK-CBS is the class of the field now. We will see how they document it, but i trust they will do a better job with Jim Farrell.

I remember when NBC/ABC in Ft. Myers teamed up doing that play-by-play coverage during Hurricane Charley. Watched the live webcast online, and I was awestruck at the quality of how they handled that. Too bad I didn't have the equipment to save the video of that stream, but I still have about two hours of mp3 audio from that coverage as the storm was bearing down on Sanibel, jogged north, and then plowed through Charlotte Harbor. Amazing coverage.

Btw, if anyone knows of a free way that one can save streaming video (e.g. software), let me know.

Agree totally. When they brought Jim Reif and Robert Van Winkle in to cover the impending disaster dually, that took the cake. That uninterupted coverage by them was unparreled, keeping in mind I was viewing on battery powered television on Pine Island. I will never, ever forget the look in thier eyes, thier demeanor staring back at one another when there were tell tale signs that Charley was turning towards the coast that they accepted it as truth and even the laymen could see ...yet the NHC was slow to convey the fact to the public. They were very professional in thier handling of the situation although everyone watching could read between the lines at what they were saying, "look this thing is coming our way no matter what the NHC is telling you" They never stated that but viewers tuned in at the time knew exactly what they were eluding to. I think anyone that watched at that same time will share the same sentiments.

I remember that like it was yesterday. They took professional risks and won. Probably saved alot of lives. I took them very seriously and am proud that they are ours. I think the special last night was good.

I saw Jim Reif in Publix about a month after Charley and thanked him for the coverage. He was very modest....

I remember that. I was glued to it for hours. It was amazing how it made that left turn to avoid Sanibel. It was within just a few miles at that point.
