7-year-old suspected of beating infant sister to death
By VICKIE CHACHERE, Associated Press writer
TAMPA, Fla. -- A 7-year-old boy beat his baby half-sister to death with his fists, feet and a two-by-four because he was jealous of the attention the girl was receiving and because she would not stop crying, police said yesterday.
The State Attorney's Office is deciding whether to file charges against the boy in an attack that rattled even veteran homicide detectives.
"The veteran detectives who worked on this case have never seen a case with someone as young as a 7-year-old show so much violence and so little remorse," Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.
The attack occurred May 22 in Tampa, where the boy had been visiting his father. The seven-month-old girl was dead on arrival at the hospital where her parents rushed her.
The boy confessed to killing his sister a week later when detectives confronted him with the evidence, McElroy said.
The unidentified boy was not taken into custody and is living with his mother while prosecutors make their decision on whether to charge him.
Police said the father and his girlfriend were outside visiting with neighbors when the boy came to them about midnight on the night of the attack and told them the baby was bleeding. They found the girl with a bloody nose and said she wasn't breathing.
Hillsborough County Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi said prosecutors were just beginning to review the case and the complex legal issues involved with bringing charges against such a young child. Among the elements prosecutors will have to consider is whether a child so young is competent to stand trial for a crime, Bondi said.
"There are a lot of issues," Bondi said. "This is the first time we have dealt with a 7-year-old accused of such a violent crime."

truly what is happening that little children are doing things like this?? are they learning thru example? what is it? it is really getting scary you know.
I find myself asking the same questions depotoo. Either we are now hearing of stories/tragedies that have always been in the news (b/c of the Internet) or they are on the rise. This little boy had to have witnessed some type of violent behavior to act out like this. Either from his parents or on TV/Movies. This goes way beyond kids naturally hitting another kid when they're annoyed.

Well it happens elsewhere too. Here is a story out of Britain I just found.
A BOY aged 5 was taken from his garden by an older girl and led to a wood where a gang of children apparently tried to hang him, his cousin said yesterday.
Three boys and two girls aged 11 and 12 have been arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of the boy, Anthony Brown, who is not related to any of his alleged attackers. Police in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, are looking for two or three more suspects.
The senior investigating officer said that Anthony had suffered serious injuries, including marks around his neck that could be “consistent with ligature marks” and bruises. Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan said that the child was found wandering alone and clearly distressed in the Chickenley area of Dewsbury by his cousin on Tuesday evening.
Police believe that he was assaulted between 5.30pm and 6pm in woods behind the Earlsheaton Medical Centre in Dewsbury. The area backs on to parkland and is bordered by housing estates. Several paths run through it, some of which lead to den-like areas where children play. Police visited the site yesterday and retrieved several items. Anthony was treated for his injuries at Dewsbury District Hospital and allowed home yesterday.
Mr Brennan said that it was too early to say whether Anthony was taken to the woods with an attack in mind. “He has got a number of bruises to his body and has a number of marks around his neck,” he said. Anthony’s cousin, Tracey Jones, 22, said that she found him 200 yards from his home near a chip shop almost two hours after he had vanished. She said that he was wearing a blue T-shirt and jeans, had scratches on his arms and a bright red rope-mark and bruises around his neck.
She said last night: “I asked him, ‘What the hell happened?’ and he said, ‘Some boys and girls tied a rope around my neck and tried to tie me to a tree’. I asked, ‘Why did you go with them?’ and he said, ‘They wouldn’t let me go’. He hadn’t wanted to go, he was taken and then after doing what they did they abandoned him.”
