Kid Rock headed to court for allegedly assaulting a strip-club DJ

By Emanuella Grinberg, Court TV Staff Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn - Grammy-nominated singer and self-styled "American Bad A**" Kid Rock will appear in a Nashville courtroom Wednesday to enter a plea on an assault charge stemming from a strip-club brawl in February.

Born Robert James Ritchie in Romeo, Mich., the rapper-rocker was arrested at 7 a.m. on Feb. 16, 2005, for allegedly punching DJ Jeremy Campos at the Nashville strip club Christy's. Ritchie was enjoying a night out in Music City after attending a funeral for deceased country legend Merle Kilgore.

The self-proclaimed "Son of Detroit," who is as well-known for dating stuff stars and partying as he is for his platinum-selling albums, could face up to 11 months in prison if he goes to trial.

But court officials say misdemeanor assault cases such as his rarely make it to trial and often result in probation sentences.

"We just don't have enough room for all of them," said Davidson County general sessions deputy clerk Steve Tucker.

A spokesman for Ritchie, who made previous headlines in 2003 for a fight with a photographer who took pictures of him with his former fiancée, Pamela Anderson, said his most recent brush with the law will do little to curb the performer's bad-boy attitude.

"Kid Rock will continue to be Kid Rock," the artist's friend and acting publicist, Kirt Webster, said. "This assault charge is not going to keep him from partying or going to strip clubs, and the arrest will not deter him from returning to Nashville."

Witnesses at the scene reported that the incident began with verbal sparring between Campos and a member of Kid Rock's party, who criticized the DJ's choice of music, according to police.

"Ritchie, believing that his friend had been disrespected by Campos, went up to the DJ booth and demanded that Campos apologize," a police statement from the Metro Nashville Police Department said. "Campos refused."

Ritchie, 34, then allegedly stormed the DJ booth and punched Campos, 30, in the left eye. "As others tried to separate the two, Ritchie struck Campos a second time," the report said, before leaving the club with his friends.

Police arrested Ritchie a few hours later at a friend's house, reporting he was "extremely cooperative and friendly during his entire time with the officers."

One of the officers who attended to his arrest was fired after he obtained an autograph from the rocker.

Campos' lawyer, Steve Stephenson, said his client is considering a civil suit.

"He was the victim of an unprovoked assault, from which he is still recovering his eyesight," the Nashville-based lawyer said.

Stephenson said he was also in the process of investigating a wrongful termination suit against the club. "He was let go from his job a few weeks later, and we have a sneaking suspicion it was because of this incident. But we're still investigating the situation."

Rap mogul 'Suge' Knight ordered to pay $107M over owed money

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Court TV/AP) — A judge has ordered Marion "Suge" Knight to pay $107 million to a woman who claims she helped the rap mogul start Death Row Records, ruling Knight and his lawyers failed to answer questions and provide information in the case.

Superior Court Judge Ronald M. Sohigian ordered Knight and his companies, including Tha Row Inc., to pay Lydia Harris, who claims she is owed money from the recording label she helped establish.

The judgment includes $60 million in punitive damages, $45 million in economic damages and $2 million in noneconomic damages.

The judge issued the judgment earlier this month after finding that Knight and his lawyers violated court rules requiring them to answer questions by and providing information to Harris and her lawyers.

A phone call to a Knight lawyer seeking comment wasn't immediately returned early Wednesday.

In her 2002 lawsuit, which didn't reach trial, Harris claimed she and Knight in 1989 became equal founding partners of Death Row Records. When Knight realized how lucrative the label would become, he pushed her out, Harris claimed.

Harris said Knight defamed her in hopes of destroying her credibility in the music industry and with new artists.

"His conduct made it clear that he did not intend to honor his agreement or pay the shares of profit due her," said her lawyer, David Casselman. "He also publicly insulted her and falsely accused her of promiscuity and incompetence."

Knight has had a series of legal and criminal troubles.

In 2003, he was ordered to pay $5.5 million to managers of artists who accused him of stealing one of their acts.

Knight was released from prison in 2001 after serving time for assault and weapons violations. He recently served an additional 10-month prison sentence for violating his parole and striking a Hollywood nightclub valet.

Singer and actress Grace Jones removed from Eurostar train after row

LONDON, England (AFP) - Actress and pop star Grace Jones was removed by police from a Eurostar train in Britain following a furious row over her ticket, police and rail officials said.

Jones, 56, who was born in Jamaica but spent much of her career based in the United States, was thrown off the train from Paris to London when it stopped in Ashford, south of the British capital, late Tuesday.

According to Eurostar officials, Jones boarded the train in Paris with a first-class ticket but sat in the area reserved for premium-class ticket holders, a more exclusive travel class.

"Grace Jones was challenged by the train manager and was told that, as she did not have a premium-class ticket, she would have to pay for an upgrade," Eurostar communications director Paul Charles said.

"She said she had no money and refused to move from the carriage. Passengers told us that she was arguing and verbally abusing the train manager. She then attacked the manager, grabbing her arm.

"A male catering assistant managed to separate the two women and tried to calm Ms Jones down."

According to passengers on the train, Jones also swore at the train worker in French and English.

After the train was held up for 15 minutes, Jones was removed by three British Transport Police (BTP) officers and was later driven to London by an assistant.

"Ms Jones was challenged over her ticket and asked to pay an excess charge," a BTP spokesman said.

"She refused to pay and officers were called. She left the train at their request. No further action is being taken."

Jones had a string of disco-tinged hit pop singles in the late 1970s and 1980s, becoming famous for her striking, androgynous looks and athletic physique.

She used these attributes to begin a film career, starring in action title "Conan The Destroyer" and James Bond movie "A View to a Kill" in the mid-1980s.

Jones also acquired a reputation for being temperamental, once infamously slapping a British television chat show host after he turned away from her to talk to another guest.

Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs ordered to pay $21,000 a month in child support

NEW YORK (AP) — Hip-hop star Sean "P. Diddy" Combs has been ordered to pay more than $21,000 a month in child support to an ex-girlfriend with whom he has an 11-year-old son.

The order, issued Thursday by the New York Supreme Court's Appellate Division, came after Combs appealed a Westchester Family Court ruling last year that he should pay $35,000 a month. He currently pays about $5,000.

The ex-girlfriend, Misa Hylton-Brim, had sued for higher monthly payments and about $398,000 in back support for their son, Justin.

The appellate court judge awarded a lower but undisclosed amount in back support and ordered Combs to pay Hylton-Brim's legal fees. The judge set monthly support payments at $21,782.

Rob Shuter, a spokesman for Combs, said Combs would appeal the decision to the state Court of Appeals.

Combs, 35, also pays child support to ex-girlfriend Kim Porter for his second son, Christian.

'American Pie' star Chris Klein faces drunk driving charge

SAN DIEGO, Ca. (AP) — "American Pie" star Chris Klein is facing a drunken driving charge in San Diego.

Klein, 26, was arrested by San Diego County Sheriff's deputies Feb. 5. He was charged last month with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence and driving with a blood-alcohol content of .20 and above. The legal limit in California is .08.

Arraignment is scheduled April 29, the district attorney's office said.

A mug shot of the actor was published on the Web site of The Smoking Gun, which first reported news of the arrest. Klein was arrested under his full name, Frederick Christopher Klein.

Klein was featured in the 1999 film "Election" and played the character of Chris "Oz" Ostreicher in 1999's "American Pie."

R&B Singer D'Angelo pleads guilty to marijuana possession, drunk driving

RICHMOND, Va. (Court TV/AP) — Michael Eugene Archer, better known as D'Angelo, has pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and driving under the influence of alcohol after a January traffic stop.

Archer, 31, a Richmond native, waived his preliminary hearing on a third charge of possession of cocaine, a felony. A Chesterfield General District Court judge certified that charge to a Chesterfield Circuit Court grand jury.

The R&B singer was fined $250 Wednesday and given a 90-day suspended jail term on the DUI conviction. Archer's driver's license was suspended for one year.

On the marijuana charge, Archer was fined $50 and given a 10-day suspended jail term. His driver's license was suspended for an additional six months.

In an unusual legal maneuver, authorities said Archer appealed both the marijuana and DUI convictions to Chesterfield Circuit Court.

Archer was pulled over on Jan. 9 in suburban Richmond, where he was charged with driving under the influence. Authorities said a subsequent search yielded marijuana and .029 grams of cocaine.

Martial arts star Yuen Qiu arrested for illegal gambling

HONG KONG, China (AP) — Martial arts star Yuen Qiu, who plays a landlady in "Kung Fu Hustle," was arrested in an underground mahjong parlor and fined for illegal gambling, a newspaper reported.

Yuen was arrested March 31 along with 10 other women and two men, the Apple Daily reported Wednesday. She pleaded guilty to illegal gambling on April 1 and was fined $510, the report said.

"She knows she did something wrong," Apple Daily quoted an unidentified spokesman at Yuen's management agency as saying.

Police spokeswoman Anita Chow confirmed the raid but didn't provide names of those arrested. Court spokesman Mackenzie Mak said he didn't have any information on Yuen's case.

A contact number for Yuen wasn't immediately available.

Yuen, who played a student who rescues Roger Moore in the 1974 James Bond movie "The Man With the Golden Gun," is enjoying a career comeback after appearing in Stephen Chow's film.

Her performance as a no-nonsense landlady who's secretly a kung fu master won her a nomination for best actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Rapper DMX Arrested in Crash of NYC Police Car

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rapper DMX was arrested after a three-car crash involving a police cruiser on a major New York City expressway, police said on Saturday.

Police said a car driven by DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, hit another car, which then slammed into the cruiser late Friday on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx. Two police officers were treated for minor injuries.

The 34-year-old hip-hop star was charged with driving with a suspended license and released, police said.

The driver of the first car hit was treated for minor injuries, according to local papers.

Last year, DMX was jailed for weapon and drug possession, and criminal impersonation after trying to steal a car then crashing into another vehicle through a parking lot gate at New York's Kennedy Airport.

Singer Art Garfunkel heads to Wisconsin court over speeding ticket

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Court TV/AP) — Singer Art Garfunkel has an appearance slated in Wisconsin this week — a court date for a speeding ticket.

Garfunkel, 63, was in Wisconsin last month for a concert at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton. Records show that he was ticketed March 12 by the Wisconsin State Patrol for speeding 11 to 15 mph over the posted limit on a freeway.

Garfunkel's court date was set for Monday in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court. However, the majority of out-of-state residents simply forfeit the bond they've posted for the traffic offense rather than appear in court.

Bond for Garfunkel's speeding offense was set at $181.

No telephone listing for Garfunkel could be found when The Associated Press tried to reach him for comment Sunday.

Member of jazz-fusion group pleads guilty to tax evasion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Court TV/AP) — A member of the jazz-fusion group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones has pleaded guilty to one count of income tax evasion, a prosecutor said.

Roy Wilfred Wooten, who uses the names Futureman and RoyEl in his music career, was indicted in November 2001 on four counts of income tax evasion for the years 1995-98, U.S. Attorney Jim Vines said Tuesday.

Authorities say Wooten falsely filed forms saying he was exempt from income tax. The grand jury indictment claims he conducted his affairs in cash to avoid detection and concealed a taxable income over the four years of about $379,000, on which he owed more than $100,000 in taxes.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 8.

A spokeswoman for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones refused to comment.

Wooten plays the drumitar, a guitar-shaped instrument he invented that allows him to replicate the sound of a drum kit with a few fingers. He also invented The RoyEl, a piano-shaped instrument that uses samples of sounds from nature.

Wooten has been a member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones since 1990.

Recording associates sue Lil' Kim in dispute over album fees

NEW YORK (Court TV/AP) — Grammy-winning hip-hop star Lil' Kim has been sued by two men who say she failed to pay them for song writing and performing services for her 2003 CD "La Bella Mafia," which sold more than 1 million copies.

The men say in court papers filed Monday in Manhattan's state Supreme Court that Lil' Kim, whose real name is Kimberly Jones, paid them nothing for their work other than giving each man a piece of jewelry she said was worth $10,000.

However, court papers allege that Lil' Kim later demanded the jewelry back and threatened physical violence if the men refused. The men's lawyer, Kenneth Sussmane, said "a very large person came around to collect the pieces, and they gave them back."

Lil' Kim's entertainment lawyer, L. Londell McMillan, denied the allegations.

"They were paid," he said. "They were paid by Atlantic Records (Division of Warner Bros. Records Inc.). They had a falling out, and now they've filed a frivolous and malicious lawsuit to embarrass her."

Anthony Jeffries and Vincent Hart, both 23, say they co-wrote three songs on the "La Bella Mafia" album and performed on a fourth. They say each was promised $15,000 for performing and $10,000 plus royalties for each song they co-wrote.

The men say Lil' Kim, 29, also promised to pay them $400 plus per-diem expenses for appearances at her concerts and promotional engagements. They appeared at more than 30 concerts and promotions and were paid for only one, court papers said.

The lawsuit seeks $100,000 for each plaintiff.

McMillan accused the men of capitalizing on the hip-hop sensation's notoriety stemming from her March conviction on charges of lying to a federal grand jury about a gunfight outside a Manhattan radio station. She will be sentenced June 24.

The rapper won a Grammy in 2001 for her part in the hit remake of "Lady Marmalade."

Singer McCready Charged With DWI in Tenn.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) - Country singer Mindy McCready was arrested early Friday and charged with drunken driving.

McCready was stopped about 3 a.m. in the suburb of Belle Meade by police who said she was speeding, driving 58 mph in a 45 mph zone. The police report said the officer smelled alcohol in the vehicle and McCready performed poorly on a field sobriety test. The report also said she refused to take a breath alcohol test.

McCready is on three years' supervised probation from an incident last year in the suburb of Brentwood. She pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin at a pharmacy in February 2004, using the name of a friend on the prescription.

She was fined $4,000 and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service work.

McCready's hits include "Ten Thousand Angels" and "A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)." Neither McCready nor her publicist could immediately be reached for comment.

Actor Chris Tucker pleads guilty to speeding, eluding police

WARRENTON, Ga. (AP) — Chris Tucker has pleaded guilty to speeding and eluding police during a brief car chase last month. The actor told authorities he didn't hear their sirens because he was on his way to church.

Tucker, 32, entered the pleas Tuesday in Warren County Probate Court and paid a fine of $6,999, court clerk Jeremy Moore said Thursday.

Tucker was driving a Bentley at 109 mph on Interstate 20 on April 17 when Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to pull him over, Moore said. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 70 mph.

The pursuit lasted for about 10 miles before Tucker stopped, Moore said. Afterward, he told police he was traveling from Atlanta to Columbia, S.C., to go to church, Moore said. The drive is more than 200 miles.

The Atlanta native's movie credits include the "Rush Hour" series and "Jackie Brown."

He hosted the 2002 MTV Movie Awards.

Indiana songwriter sues Britney Spears over song

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana songwriter is suing singer Britney Spears for copyright infringement, claiming he wrote the song "Sometimes" 15 years ago.

An attorney for Steve Wallace of Anderson filed a complaint May 5 in federal court against Spears, her album promoter, Sony/BMG Music Publishing Inc., and recording and publishing companies affiliated with the singer.

The complaint acknowledges Wallace did not formally copyright his song until 2003. A few weeks after writing the song in 1990, he executed what's commonly known as a "poor man's" copyright: He placed his work in a sealed envelope and obtained a postmark. He shopped the song around to publishers in 1994 and submitted it to a lyric contest in Pennsylvania in 1997.

Wallace also submitted as an exhibit a copy of what he claims is an e-mail from Spears in which she wrote: "I now know for a fact that you wrote sometimes. But there's nothing I can do about it. That's all I can say about it." It's not clear from the copy when Spears allegedly wrote the e-mail.

Spears, 23, obtained a U.S. copyright for "Sometimes" on Jan. 22, 1999. It appeared on her 1999 debut album, "... Baby One More Time" and on last year's "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative."

The lyrics of the song sung by Spears are nearly identical to those written by Wallace, a side-by-side comparison submitted as evidence shows.

Wallace, 34, who writes pop, country and gospel songs, suffers from dystonia, a neurological disorder that results in tremors at times, and prevents him from talking, said his attorney, John Ritchison.

Ritchison said he tried to settle the dispute out of court, seeking recognition and licensing or payments for Wallace. Spears' attorneys replied with a one-page document denying Wallace's claim, he said.

"The New York guys decided the Indiana local boy didn't have much moxie," Ritchison said, referring to himself. "It's real difficult to get them to belly up to the bar."

Spears' publicity office referred calls Wednesday to Sony/BMG executive Wade Leak, who said it would have no comment on the lawsuit.

The complaint does not specify the damages Wallace is seeking -- other than $150,000 for each instance in which Wallace's copyright was infringed upon.

"It's real difficult when you're on the other end of it to understand what a reasonable amount is," Ritchison said.

Cameron Diaz suing The Sun newspaper
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Friday 13th May, 2005 (UPI)

Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz is suing Britain's Sun newspaper over a story claiming she was having a secret affair with a married man.

Diaz, recently linked with singer Justin Timberlake, was pictured with another man on the front page of the newspaper's Thursday edition, the BBC reported.

She directed her British lawyers, who called the Sun's report of a secret affair with a married man false, to issue and serve libel proceedings against the tabloid's publisher.

Meanwhile, Timberlake is suing another British newspaper, the News of the World, over a story that claimed he cheated on Diaz. That case is expected to go to jury trial in October.

Fan claims comedian Gallagher hit him during Nevada show

LAUGHLIN, Nev. (AP) — Police are investigating a California man's claim that comedian Gallagher slapped him during a show at a southern Nevada casino.

No criminal charges have been filed on the misdemeanor battery complaint, Las Vegas police Sgt. Chris Jones said Wednesday.

William Edwin May III, 40, of Anaheim, filed a police report May 27, several hours after the incident at Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino. It alleges that Gallagher walked on a table, berated a waitress and slapped May on the side of the head.

Gallagher, 58, is best known for smashing watermelons with a sledgehammer.

He didn't immediately return a message left Wednesday at his office in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He acknowledged in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he struck an audience member, but compared it with throwing a pie in someone's face.

"It got a laugh, and that's what this is about," he said.

The comedian said he had wanted to bring May onstage, as he had done the previous night, but May was talking with the cocktail server.

Gallagher was fired from his Memorial Day weekend booking after protesting the policy of selling drinks during his show, Roy Jernigan, Riverside entertainment director, told the Review-Journal.

Gallagher said he quit.

The comedian had worked at the Riverside for more than a decade.

Warrant issued for Bobby Brown over missed child support hearing

CANTON, Mass. (AP) — A family court judge issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for singer Bobby Brown after he failed to appear for a child support hearing.

Brown's local attorney told the judge that the singer became ill and was taken to a hospital in Atlanta, but was unable to provide proof, said Patrick McDermott, the court's Register of Probate.

McDermott said the judge might have postponed the hearing if there had been documentation of the illness.

Brown lives in Alpharetta, Ga., with his wife, singer Whitney Houston. He has two children with Kim Ward of Stoughton.

McDermott said Brown has failed to make payments to an educational trust for those two children, had not proven his source of income, and had not made the latest monthly child support payment by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline.

Brown, who has a history of drug and alcohol arrests, was sentenced to 90 days in prison last June for missing three months of child support payments. That sentence was immediately suspended after Brown paid about $15,000.

If the judge finds Brown has violated the terms of the court order, she can impose her previous 90-day sentence, McDermott said. The warrant can only be executed in Massachusetts.

Brown was also jailed for a day in March 2004 after he failed to pay $63,000 he owed to Ward. He was released after he made the payment.

Brown's attorney did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

McCready's hits include "Ten Thousand Angels" and "A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)." Neither McCready nor her publicist could immediately be reached for comment.

they should give her a break
