Atlantic SSTs

#1 Postby USCG_Hurricane_Watcher » Fri Jun 03, 2005 5:04 pm

Ok...Last year, I was logging in mostly out of a mix of enthusiasm and curiosity. This year, I'm here to learn a thing a two. That being said...

Atlantic SST's are at an all-time high for this time of the year. There is no reason that this general trend should not continue for the next few months...although there will undoubetedly be some variations in any given local regions.

So educate this old salty boatswain!...What are SST's?

Sea Surface Temperature.

The whole tropical Atlantic basin north of the equator is anomalously warm this year. Particularly, the region east of the islands, and now pretty much the entire Caribbean are 1 to 2 1/2 degrees celsius warmer than normal. This extends down through the surface layer as well, with the thermocline being subtantially deeper than normal in that whole area (particularly in the Atlantic east of the islands) which means more heat to contribute to intensification of cyclones.

You know...being an air force guy...I could have a lot of fun at your expense...not knowing what SST's are... being in the Coast Guard and all...but I won't. :-) hehe
