Mikes Interview with Stacy Stewart

#1 Postby EDR1222 » Tue Jun 07, 2005 12:17 pm

I know the topic of troughs and ridges has been beaten to death on here lately, but I wanted to see what everyones thoughts were on what Stacy Stewart had talked about earlier in the year with Mike on radio NHCwx concerning patterns that exist during the hurricane season.

One point he brought up had to do with the years 1995-2003 where, as many of us remember, there were quite a few storms that stayed well offshore. Mr. Stewart brought up the point that in 2004 there was pretty much a flip-flop from the previous pattern. He mentioned that it would be unlikely to see it revert back to the type of patterns that existed from 1995-2003 after just one year, but he also said it doesn't mean that it couldn't happen.

I was just curious what everyones thoughts were concerning this discussion and what everyone thinks may happen in the coming months. I know it is hard to know what the prevailing patterns will be once we reach the heart of the hurricane season, but any thoughts and comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Ed

I don't know how West coast weather translates to East coast patterns, but it's been exceptionally troughy out here this year, more so than last. Yesterday's high here in San Fran. was 61. Some of the valleys dropped to 36 degrees with frost this morning, with a blustery wind out of the west sometimes gusting to 30-40 mph.

Rain showers are excepted tomorrow, something unheard of in June.

Isn't there a rule that West coast troughiness means East coast ridging?

Yep... usually one coast has the troughs and the other is hot and dry. It can work in reverse too.

Frost in JUNE?

Impossible to predict lanfalls--anything would merely be an educated guess.
