Kurihara et al 1995 documented the GFS vprtex removal technique.

However, it does more than remove the hurricane fields from the model, it dampens any troughs near the TC as well. Thus, much of the wind shear affecting the storm is replaced by the smoothing algorithm, which may explain why GFS ALWAYS makes conditions favorable, because their technique requires it to
