A letter from Accuweather

#1 Postby vbhoutex » Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:30 pm

I recieved this email from Accuweather today. I had forgotten I have their radar for pay package or something like that. I need to cancel it!!

Can you belileve this crap!!!!!

Dear David:

Your access to AccuWeather.com services may be threatened by government action!

AccuWeather and other commercial weather providers have been able to offer you highly accurate, localized and up-to-date weather information on the Internet by applying the latest science and technology to weather information collected by the National Weather Service and shared with the public.

Unfortunately, the National Weather Service can, and increasingly does, delay and withhold information from the public, including the Commercial Weather Industry and the media. Among the information sometimes withheld are cooperative observer real-time snowfall reports, hurricane reconnaissance reports, and other critical information. Withholding such information endangers lives and property and diminishes the value of the weather communications infrastructure of the nation, including this and other similar web sites.

Senate Bill 786, "The National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005," was recently introduced into Congress to require the National Weather Service (NWS) to distribute government-generated weather information "in real-time, and without delay . . . in a manner that ensures that all members of the public have the opportunity for simultaneous and equal access." No such requirement currently exists in federal law.

When passed, this bill will mandate that the public, including users like pilots, boaters and farmers, weather enthusiast and professionals alike, will all have unrestricted real-time access to government weather information that is being collected by our tax dollars.

We urge with you to join with us in supporting Senate Bill 786, "The National Weather Services Duties Act of 2005."

Inaccuweather wants us to pay for stuff we can get for free. Makes no sense.
I suggest we boycott it, don't mention it, nothing.

Considering accuweather's recent inaccuracies (I quit using them last year for that reason), maybe they won't be around too much longer...

Have to remember that Joe Sixpack is not interested in accuracy but in nice looking graphics and nicer looking female OCM's.

Has the weather channel taken a position on this? Wouldn't they be in the same boat as hackuweather?

Is this assertion total fabrication, or is there any basis to what they are claiming (the with holding)?

I would think TWC would be for it; although Accu-Weather (as far as I know RIGHT NOW) does not have a cable network, both have their own forecasters.

It would be like if the governement ran the local supermarket and then gave ownership to the WalMarts, Krogers, Albertsons, etc. Make a better product/service, and perhaps you will be gifted with customers.

If the feds have it (like they do now with the NWS), people can just by-pass the private companies and go for the NWS data WHICH THEY RIGHTFULLY DESERVE AS TAXPAYERS.

I think this is a STUPID bill, and I really don't think it will pass. However, Washington, D.C. can get tricky sometimes.

I'm with you there. What a way to twist the facts!!! :grr:

I haven't used "Inaccuweather" in a while and don't intend to.

I think that a website, blog or editorial sent to newspapers nationwide should be created for the public to see. It should include that letter. :grr:

Have followed the path of AccuWeather and its founder Joel Myers over the years. In the late 1980's, a group of some seventy or so weather folks descended on State College PA for a weekend weather fest.

The featured speaker at our Friday night dinner was none other than AccuWeather's Elliott Abrams. He's a class act (just got an email from him about a month ago!). Also met both Dr. Myers and his brother Barry.

They opened their facility to us for the tour, and we were grateful. I have met Dr. Myers one other time in the late 1990's in Las Vegas at a convention there.

While our experience as weather fans with them was part of an enjoyable weekend (we had a great time touring Penn State's Meteorology Dept too), AccuWeather has been consistent over the years in their public criticism before Congress and elsewhere on value and control that the National Weather Service provides.

David...your letter is no surprise. Last I heard, they were still hopeful that someday weather data would come out from under the control of our government and be open to those who can provide the services in the private sector...such as, no surprise, AccuWeather.

Let's weigh them both in each of our hands folks...

TWC- A piece of crap...

Accuwannabeweather - A bigger piece of crap that doesn't have Jim Cantore, plus Joe Bastardardi's hurricane predictions are on TOO BROAD of a scale half of the time anyway.

All together now....THEY SUCK @$$!

I know the regular John/Julie couldn't care less about what the GFS is saying; all they want is if they need to wear boots, shorts, or a rainjacket. However, most of us here look past fancy graphics, and some here really get in-depth (I would say I am in between). If this nutty bill passes, AHH! :x :x :x
