#1 Postby PerfectStorm » Fri Jun 10, 2005 3:08 pm

Per Channel 9 Bay News in Tampa, Gov Jeb Bush has declared a state of emergency for Florida to activate the storm preparedness program. Will post link as soon as I find one.

A state of emergency was declared this morning in escambia county Florida..and our local news said Santa rosa county was inclined to do the same this afternoon. Gas lines are OUTRAGEOUS at this time in Santa Rosa county...a few stations actually ran out of gasoline earlier today. People are taking this very seriously..along with the EMC.

After getting pounded so bad last year and still recovering I am sure FL isn't taking chances this year

For this storm? I can actually say I'm surprised.

I think there is a realization that we are entering this in weakened state. We have a lot of people still living in FEMA trailers, roofs with tarps, etc. so it's being taken a little more seriously, IMO.

A lot of people in the Panhandle still have tarps as roofs and piles of debris everywhere. They need to be secured. It won't take very strong winds for that stuff to go flying.

Yeah but haven't they been having record rains in FL? I can't imagine they are too happy to be adding more even if it is from a strong TS/minimal Hurricane.

I was shopping at Home Depot this afternoon and was amazed to see all the people buying generators. There was at least 30 of them all at the same time.

Don't know if they were taking advantage of the last few days of free tax or if Arlene got them worried, but it sure brought back memories of last summer.

No state of emergency over here in AL, at least as far as I know. However, I was just driving around Mobile about an hour ago and noted several signs of hurricane preparation. The grocery stores and Wal-Mart are swarming with people. The gas stations have folks lined up, waiting their turns. It seems that folks are doing what they're being told to prepare.

State of emergency here doesn't necessarily mean that they think it's going to be bad. It's just that there are a good number of state consumer protection laws covering price-gouging and such that kick in once you get the official emergency declaration, and some other technical/legal issues surrounding emergency management that make it easier to fix/deal with problems once the declaration is issued.

Everyone here is pretty much just expecting they'll have to spend the weekend holed up because of heavy rains/low road flooding. In the mean time, Best Buy in Destin still had a big stack of generators for sale, and the surfers have been rushing out to the beach today with that gleam in their eye.

A little note here about debris and FEMA...

The people across the street from us lost the kids tree house to Ivan so they tore it down. WAY before the pickup deadline, Fema was contacted about the debris they had on the side of the road. Fema told them they would get it. Months passed and they were contacted again..now the deadline has passed and they are left with a bunch of debris.
Fema is now helping tie down their trailers ..especially over on the beach.
