Live Report from Dauphin Island

#1 Postby rockyman » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:02 pm

Howdy, All!

I've been lurking so far this season, but thought someone might like a report from Dauphin Island...so here goes...

My wife and I and our 2 goldens just spent about an hour on the beach...We met 9 surfers, 3 black labs, one terrified tourist from St. Louis, and a TV news crew (no patridges because we have no pear trees to speak of).

The winds are getting brisk...in the 20-30 mph range...but the evening was absolutely beautiful!

We've made the decision (it was a hard one to make) to stay on the Island tonight...We're going to keep an eye on the water level and move to the East (sheltered) end of the Island if need-be...probably the country club or my office in the center of town...

I'm getting the generator ready for what will surely be a big day tomorrow...we bought ours when we got back on the Island after Ivan...

I'll post for as long as I can...I have internet via cell phone if the internet satellite goes out...

Signing off for now...By the way, thanks everyone for the great new attitudes this year...everyone seems to be in a better mood than last year...and the posts I've read so far have been so well though-out that I don't even bother watching the local mets or TWC anymore.

I saw on the news that all condo reservations on Dauphin Island had been canceled. And it sounds like a lot of folks are hunkering down rather than moving out. Be careful down there!

just a quote from the site that rockyman provided

Weather nerds are upgrading the power of the storm to suspected 60 to 90 mph sustained at landfall. This will put gusts to over 100 mph. I just got back from the west end and east end. Houses that had 30 feet of beach a few days ago are about 6 or 8 feet from having water under them and erosion is obvious, even at this early stage of the storm. It's not expected here until late tomorrow night.

It may be a cat 1...but that may be all that is needed...

PS: "weather nerds..." hahaha...I suppose he means that in a positive way considering he is using the forecasts provided from these people :)

Home Improvements

#8 Postby rockyman » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:41 pm

Thanks everyone for your kind words!

This will be the first test of our new metal roof and vertical vinyl siding...After Ivan we covered up our old shingle roof (after losing about 1/3 of the shingles) and the old wood siding....I'd say 9 out of 10 new roofs since Ivan are metal...

Gotta feed the hounds now...will post again once something happens

This made me laugh. Were they running up and down the beach screaming?

St. Louis

#11 Postby rockyman » Fri Jun 10, 2005 8:47 pm

The St. Louis natives were a little too, shall we say, "marinated" to run up and down the beach...something in those mysterious kool-aid looking drinks...

well up here in NC when that happens to locals here right before a good storm its usually because of what we call a "Hurricane Party" :)

I can appreciate the terrified St Louis tourists remarks... I have relatives from St Louis who have been calling me all day to find out how I'am... I guess what they are basically trying to say is "Are you dead yet?" LoL Well at least it is nice to be loved! I hope you, your wife, the hounds and the tourists weather the storm alright Rocky. It looks like Arlene keeps on her current track you will do well. I will continue to look for your updates. Hunker down!!!

Winds have REALLY picked up since 11pm

#16 Postby rockyman » Fri Jun 10, 2005 11:57 pm

Good Evening, All!

I'm out on the deck using my wireless internet (doncha just love technology!) and the wind is becoming fierce...I've left my US flag up for a while and it is making such a loud noise my golden is hiding! The frogs are also going crazy...they always sing a chorus when a storm is coming! I have the bikes elevated in my ground floor storage building and I have my generator ready to go...nothing left to do now but wait and watch...Have a great night everyone...be safe! R

Cannot argue with the frog theory...driving up 75 from Naples, could hear them croaking from the median. I kept wondering if I was having car troubles! It was a little "squally" at the time.

You too. Don't go picking up any old terrified tourists, look for the ones who will share their 'medicine.' :)
